Service charge [AT] Four Seasons hairdressers
Afternoon all. I've just got back from the hairdressers at the Four Seasons and wanted to pass something on.
(what's that? oh right, yes, it looks good, thanks for asking)
I haven't been there for a while, and since my last visit they've introduced a policy of adding a 10% service charge to the bill. They've put a sign on the front desk informing customers of this, and telling you that this means you are no longer obliged to tip the staff. So I asked the receptionist whether this 10% went to the staff and she didn't understand what I said, but one of the hairdressers confirmed that the 10% actually goes to the company, not the staff.
There have been a few threads about tipping and compulsory service charges recently, and I still stand by what I say about only tipping if you think they deserve it, and I know lots of places add a service charge to the bill and I expect in most cases that it doesn't go to the staff. But I wanted to bring this instance to your attention as I think it's pretty shoddy behaviour for a company to go as far as putting up a sign implying that the staff's tip is included in your bill, when actually the company keeps it.
Ok, I've said what I wanted to, now get back to whatever you were doing. Thank you.
I was given a gift certificate for the 4 Seasons spa and I went a month after I received the gift certificate. I was told I would have to pay more as their services went up since my friend bought the certificate. I refused to pay anymore and wrote to the Manager and told him how ridiculous, many people don't even use their certificates and they get their money and interest until you use the service. I tried them again and they totally messed up so I have given up they do really odd things and just blame each other. I would bring it up to the Management if enough of people boycott these places maybe they will change their tactics of stealing. Hotels underpay their staff as it is, what an insult they add another 10%. Is it legal what they are doing, their is a consumer fraud division in Qatar.
thexonic - trust me, I've been to several of the 20 riyal hairdressers and they have no clue what to do with my hair, resulting in some shocking hair-dos! Those QLers who've met me will no doubt vouch for the fact that I have more hair than your average fella!
No disrespect to these establishments, they provide a great service for some people, but not me unfortunately.
So I am more than happy to pay a bit more to have someone who knows what they're doing with it. And I can just about bear paying the 10% service charge to the company. My gripe is that they implied that it takes the place of the tip and goes to the staff, which it doesn't.
But is there not law in Qatar for charging service Tax. This tax is a big revenue in India and there is a limit for each and every service provider can charge and no way can this be substituted for tips.
Tip is a personal perogative (that is what i think) u cant force customers to pay up unnecessary and if he/she doesnt want to
I can see service in this hairdresser and the likes going down because of low employee morale

lol why go to four seasons then???
I mean I dont get it, why do men go to hair dressers and spend 120 riyals for a hair cut, when they can get that done for about 20 riyals. Not like anyone will notice anything different. Just a waste of money..
