JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Hundreds of people burned a mosque Monday in the West Java province of Indonesia, police said.

Around 300 people attacked the Al Furqon mosque about 1 a.m., damaging a nearby school, police said. The mosque belonged to the Ahmadiyah sect considered heretical by many in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.

The attack happened after negotiations to remove a sign with the name of the sect, police said, and comes a week after religious scholars, government officials and prosecutors recommended the sect be outlawed for "deviating from Islamic principles," The Associated Press reported.

Many sect members had fled the area prior to the attack, AP said.

"We heard the attackers chanting 'burn, burn' and 'kill, kill,"' a sect member, Zaki Firdaus, told AP. "It was horrifying."

Firdaus said around 200 sect members had escaped the mosque before the attack. A sect spokesman, Syamsir Ali, told AP that efforts to ban Ahmadiyah beliefs had prompted an escalation of violence again

Yes, you are referring to the total land area.

I am referring to the number of diverse communities in a total area (archipelago). There are 742 languages and many more dialects.

Some islands are as different to each other as are many countries can be i.e. language, food, religion etc.

its just that, it makes me sad, when i saw this news bcoz indonesia is the world's largest population of muslims. and as we all knw we preach patience and love and kindess to all humans. and whn our own muslims are fighting with each other, there is no point in calling yr self a human

1 article from newspaper not represent over 200 million people.

Indonesia is larger and more diverse than Europe by far, we don't compare European countries to each other as such.

Just for interest, the size of Indonesia (13500 islands)from East to West is the same distance as from the northern tip of Scotland to central Africa ......... amazing, check it out on a map.

Lots of communities live happily side by side. For example Christians and Muslims in Ambon share the same villages with churches and Mosques side by side for generations. 'Outsiders' with hidden agenda (normally politic) come over to cause trouble and incite violence.

ahmadiyah is not islam, in some article sunni and syiah denies ahmadiyah being part of them. because they don't believe Muhammad SAW as a last prophet and have their own holy book.

i fully agree with indonesian government decision to ban ahmadiyah after the government giving them a warning in early january 2008 to obey the discussion agreement result ( back to real islam that believe Muhammad SAW and holy Quran because ahmadiyah claimed they are moslem).

and it is not mosque that burned, but it is campus.

ps : never trust CNN. in some cases they manipulate the fact.

a modern Islamic sect and the generic name for various Sufi (Muslim mystic) orders. The sect was founded in Qadian, the Punjab, India, in 1889 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (c. 1839–1908), who claimed to be the mahdi (a figure expected by some Muslims at the end of the world), the Christian Messiah, an incarnation of the Hindu god Krishna, and a reappearance (buruz) of Muhammad. The sect's doctrine, in some aspects, is unorthodox: …
