Should politics triumph over ethics ?

Been following the Afghan elections..

Everyone is saying they were rigged - same as Karzai's election as President.

NPR's Quil Lawrence reports from Kabul that despite hundreds of reported irregularities, Afghan government and international officials have proclaimed the elections a success.

So, should we turn a blind eye to the rigging/fraud just so that we can say we've introduced democracy ?

you can run a small tribe by jirga, not a country..

Yes, but who elects the Jirga :O)

BritExpat.. Is that not what our Parliament does in the House of commons..

Jirga also sets some laws to abide by similar to a elected body?

By britexpat• 21 Sep 2010 11:22

The Jirga system is for conflict resolution and decision making by concensus..

Afghanistan has its own way or governance for many centuries called the Jirga system. They should really take that into account coupled with the western style democracy. Maybe a happy marriage of both ideologies is the answer to the problems in Afghanistan?

It's not democracy! Democracy has to develop fro within. If it's thrust upon them forcibly by some external power thats called dictatorship.

afghanistan is like a fish bone in the throat of US..

bringing democracy is very difficult when one hand the leaders are corrupt and on the other hand the voters are getting death threats by the taliban..

despite the threats that some 1.6 million out of 4 million registered voters came out to vote..thats the official figure and so cant be believed. fake voter cards and double votings...thats a different story..

all said and done, if we are optimistic, we can say that its the beginning of democracy there but a lot needs to be done.

be less futile. Afghanistan is a lost cause for all concerned ("invaders" as dotty likes to call them and Afghans). Build a giant wall around them (or us) and withdraw.

They had a election in Lanka and then they jailed the opposition guy. This guys carry their politics everywhere and they have no idea about ethics or ignore it to get their way and they seem to be good at licking it up the right way where and when it matters

Elections..!!!!!!!!! instead just give this guys some food on their table and a place to live and elections could be left for another day.

Well said.. An Afghan said as much - "The parliament has done nothing but suck the blood of the Afghan people, he said, noting that many of the same former warlords will probably be reelected. "

hamada, I agree. True democracy has to grow by itself. Only then will the people be able to live it.

The thing is that in Afghanistan democracy can't work. How thick are some people to keep forcing democracy on them. They will always be more loyal to their local warlord than to whoever gets to call himself Prime Minister or president or whatever.

nascent democracy is always chaotic and it needs a strong and popular leader to carry it though that phase...give it some time to stablize and for such a leader to emerge.

No USA & UK can't turn a blind eye now ex.expat because they have been fighting a war in that country for that past 10 years in the name of establishing democracy since their original target was long gone and no sign of him being in Afghanistan for a long long time. So if they leave without establishing their version of democracy then this whole exercise will appear even more futile than what it actually is. Atleast after establishing democracy they will somehow be able to justify killing innocents that hey atleast we made them democratic.

Leave them to their own devices. The election is a waste of money.

I do not think it makes a difference either way. I also think that nobody of somewhat sound mind would believe that democracy exists in any shape or form over there.

Other than that, I agree with exex expat.

They should solve the problem??? It's internal Political.

If they think that it was a fraud then they should protest, they should go to the street until he stepped down and admit that it was vote rigging... If they have a Democratic form of of Government.

For me i have to keep my two eyes blind.
