By drmk

Dear friends,

I am a new member into this forum. I am Dr.Muthukumar, called as MK by my friends back home. well, i am working in malaysia right now ( since 2003 ). i am specialised in pediatrics and trained in neonatalogy, accident and emergency and psychiatry as well. i am comfortable right now in malaysia.

I am offered a job as a pediatrician with FMG hospital in Doha with a gross salary of about 16000 QR a month. my wife is a dietitian and she is offered 6000 QR a month.

My queries?

1. Doctors average salary in doha?
2. We have two children, the first boy is ten years and second boy is two years old. My first boy is studying in india( english medium fifth standard ) and completing in May 2009, can he get a placement in one of the indian schools for sixth standard by June 2009?
3. We would need atleast a two bedroom furnished apartment. can we afford that?
4. I would like to buy a basic car, but new. Can we afford to take a loan and what is the interest structure?
5. We would like to save atleast 25% of our earnings. Is it possible?
6. Is it advisable to work for private hospital or a government hospital under MOH?

Sorry too many queries. kindly advise!

regards,

Dr.S.Muthukumar

I think coming to Qatar is little risky specialy coming to private sector its either doctor or executive class. Compare to other place in gulf Qatar is little uncertain place. Usually employee not getting salary on time and on leaving employers are not willing to give the gratuity and other end of service benefits. In my view before taking any risk of coming to Qatar better explore some alternative. and cost of living very high. So be carefull before joining any private sector and once you join, you will not be having much options.

This is a very poor salary when you compare with other industries. I assume you will have 5 to 10 years experience. Housing is very expensive. You wont find one decent 2BHK flat unless you pay 8000 to 9000.

I wont advice you to come down.

Cheers.

I thought that FMG provided accomodation for their doctors...atleast they did last yr. It is advisable to ask for accomodation instead of an allowance. ur package seems like the general package offered by them but i am sure u could negotiate.

Dear Dr.S.Muthukumar,

1. A doctors average salary is like 18-60K Depends on what post you are on. They offered you 16K+6K=22K. You can haggle with many companies here in Qatar. It depends if there is no education for your kids you might find it difficult, but if you are planing to put your children in an Indian school it will not be costly it would cost you around 300-400QR per month.

2. Yes, your son get admission in any Indian school. Your second son will not go to school so it won't really matter.

3. A 2 bedroom apartment in Qatar will cost you around Qr.5000-6500. It depends what kind of house you would like.{UF/SF/FF}

4. This also depends on which car you would like, but most of the cars in Qatar are Toyota, but I prefer Nissan. Why? It is cheap and has best qualities Toyota does to but there is a huge line for service any day you go! A new Nissan Qashqai which is perfect for your family{Very comfortable, Spacious, has a lot of room in the back for groceries and shopping} Yes, you can take it would cost you about Qr.1000 for a month until you pay all the cash.{I don't know the correct total price for the car} The bank will take at least 2.5% interest.{IBQ, Doha bank etc...}

5.Note: The Answer of Q.5 is at the bottom

6. It is good if you do, you might get a car, mobile and many other facilities, it depend on your package you are offered.

7. A question you did'nt ask but very HELPFUL

The groceries in Qatar will take you about Qr.300-500 per month, depends on what you like and how much you eat! The clothes over here are sort of expensive and might cost you something like:Qr.300-400

5. Now in total that will cost you about:Qr.350+6500+1000+450+400+300+400{For shopping and stuff[depends}=AroundQr.9000-9500 Now there might be a + or - in the total. Now if you subtract Qr.9500 from Qr.22000=Qr.12500! That more than 55%.

I hope you come to Qatar and have fun here have a great day.

what are the benefits that they are offering you?

accomodation? children education? air ticket?

if none of this is being given its better to not take up the offer as an experienced doctor in the ministry will get a better package.

I advice you to stay in Malaysia if you are getting normal doctor salaries there. Malaysian living cost is very cheap compared with Qatar living cost. You cannot enjoy the same living style here even you pay QR 10K per month... so don't look at your high Salary (which is not high for here.. compared with living cost), furthermore you will not get Malaysian life style and environment here. Basically dry Qatar is a dry (desert) country, very small too (Doha will be just a part of KL).

Anyway- I don't mean that I discourage you, best idea will be to come here for a short visit, see yourself and decide. I don't think it will be difficult for you.

Learn by experience, feel yourself, do yourself- you will be closer to reality- than just listening others.
