KARWAA taxi strike

Recently I had been for shopping to City Center, Center Point in Al Sadd and also visited a bank near Karwa Bus depot.

At each place I really had to wait for more than 45 minutes for taxi.
I did speak with the karwaa employee at City Center and Karwaa bus depot about the problem of taxi shortage. I was made to understand that Karwaa has about 2500 taxis in Doha. About 200 taxis are on the road plying people like us who still depend upon taxis for conveyance as RP still not stamped. 250 odd taxis are in police station and workshops due to accidents.

The major chunck of 2000 taxis are being kept unoperational and kept idle at karwaa premises. The drivers are simply sleeping. Cant understand the behaviour of Karwaa and its policy for doing such a thing. I reconfirmed my information with two of the karwaa drivers and they in toto with it.

Even in a democratic country whenever there is a strike called for or a bund called - the essential serivces like water / power / milk services / medicine shops / hospitals and public transportation is most often exempted.

This being a dictatorship country and as such all forms of strikes / bund / union formation etc is not permitted by law. Still this kind of company sponsored strike is not being questioned by any government department..

My information could be wrong. But if what I am told is correct, what should be done ??

The private taxi ppl re indeed giving them a hard time.

Some facts about Karwa.

1) I heard that most of the drivers are not paid monthly, but they get paid on a daily basis. Here is how it works.

Any driver who is picking a car from the karwa yard in the morning ( for 8 hrs shift ) has to pay some 250 QR in advance.

If he can make some 300 QR a day, 50 QR is his share.

No matter if he gets people or not, this 250 QR he give goes straight to karwa.

So their profit/revenue is constant no matter whatever income the drivers make  per day.

I hope you know now why karwa drivers are quitting their job or working elsewhere.

Hi Guys....It is time to laugh

A black baby was given wings by god.

He asked god "does this mean that I'm an angel now?"

God laughed and said "nah boy, you're a bat"

I think, if the govt. allows another taxi company to come out in Doha, there will be competition between both the companies and that might serve our needs better.

Karwa is inspirational... they inspired me to buy a car and I dont regret it! The orange and white ones were like crates on wheels but we could more or less get a taxi.

And if anyone from Karwa reads this....

PLEASE TELL YOUR DRIVERS TO PULL IN SAFELY AND NOT STOP DEAD ON A MAIN ROAD. AND TO SIGNAL WHEN THEY PULL OUT

yes I am shouting!!!!!!!!!!

on al Sadd there are plenty of places to pull in but they don't they stop.

I arrived in Doha on 21.09.2007 from Dubai for work. Since then I never find any on the street, if by luck you see a taxi it is full ? Anyhow i called the Karwa toll free number around 7pm for booking i was told that all the taxis fully booked until 10am next day morning !!!!

Finally I got a private car who dropped me to my hotel and charged me QR. 15 whereas Karaw taxi make only QR. 9 - 10 for the same trip ?

Recently, I called Karwa Taxi office in the morning around 11am for booking in the evening at 730pm but i was told by one of the customer service officer that they are fully booked until 10pm ?

I went down on the street to look for a taxi but I ended up with a private car !!!

So who is making money on the streets in Doha KARWA or PRIVATE CAR OWNERS ????
