I got an offer to work in qatar, i need some info on cost of living....

assalamualaikum to all qatari and forummer,

I am from Malaysia, I got an offer to work with malaysian company in qatar as an engineer. I have some question to ask regarding on cost of living in qatar. I will be moved to qatar in the end of september

1. My salary will be QR 2200. My employer provide me house, and busses as transportation to work site. Other than that is on my own. I am targeting to save my money about QR 1500 per month.

2. How much the cost of food in qatar? Let say i reserve QR10 per day, what do i get? As an example, in Kuala Lumpur, one plate of fried rice and orange juice cost me RM6 (QR1 = RM1). I would say in qatar i will eat on the morning and night only. How about cost of 1.5 litre of mineral water? In malaysia it cost RM2

3. I have been to Saudi Arabia last 3 years, i found that there are no clinic in Saudi Arabia only have hospital and pharmacy. Malaysian culture, if u suffer fever, flu, and cough we would rather to go to clinic unless u are suffering major disease then u go to hospital. Is it in qatar the condition is same with Saudi Arabia? If there is clinic in qatar, how about the cost?

4. Phone Calls. If i buy the prepaid in qatar, how much is the phone call to malaysia? And how much is the initial fees? How much the cost if i used public phone to call malaysia?

5. I work 6 days per week, saturday to thursday, i am willing to do part time job as cleaner in hospital, restaurant, or maybe i will be a servant to clean qatari house. Is there any oppurtunities to work as one day part time.

7. How about the internet cafe? how much per minute for using ADSL speed? If I have my own laptop is there any wireless service in qatar?

Tq very much for whom concerning on my question, i would appreciate it very much....

Thanks for the info on the compound. Will just have to wait and see. Looks like we will have to find another place until it's finished. Can't wait to move out there, really looking forward to it. :)

What you expect if they charge reasonable prices?

You don't really know very much about Japanese food!!! my Auntie is married to Japanese and they don't cook the same way as Indonesians do!!!

We drove past it this week, 8 months seems very optimistic to finish. :-)

We also to expect to move down there eventually.

There are 2 phases, phase 1 completion this year, and phase 2 for next year. Depend which phase you are expected to move to mesaieed.

teriyaki in landmark is horrible. No way it is near the taste of the 'teriyaki' as i know it :-)

Hi Thanks for the info. Not much choice really, one of the terms of my Husbands employment is that we will be required to live in Mesaieed once company accommodation becomes available. Again, thank you.

If you have a wire less connection, it will not cost you nothing so long as you have your own laptop with you.

Not entirely true! in Saudi Arabia We have the best medical service so does here. As I told you depends what category or nationality you are!

Here? I think they are pretty much humane. Qatari are definitely nicer in comparison to Saudi people, but still Saudi people provided us good medical service!

If I were you, see it for yourself! do not believe what other people says!!!

Do unto others, what you want to do unto you!!!

You realized? there's a proper food court in Giant, City Centre, and Landmark? which serve Teriyaki? my favorite Japanese food and etc. depends what you like.

Also they offer full medical insurance. Depends which company you're hired from.

Prepaid card will only cost you 200 Q.R. with 100 Q. Riyal loads in it and if they have promotion they will sell it for 100 Q.R with 100 Q.R. loads in it. How could you get all this information wrong?

Internet? have an ADSL which will cost you only 200 per month but continues connection.

And if you're qualified enough you can have a good job here!

Do unto others, what you want to do unto you!!!

It will take a minimum of 6-8 months before that compound is finished. This is the first phase which is being constructed so dont think that your husband will definitely be accommodated there. ALso, first come and look at the place. I dont think you will like to live is Mesaieed after you come a have a look at the place. Doha is much better although expensive.

Talking about QP & the compound they offer. My Husband is going to work for QP in Mesaieed. Does anyone know what the compound there is like & if it's finished yet? Thank you.

Just read about your plight...

Good offer I would say but is your kids education part of it?

I don't have kids but I know its kinda pricey to school one here and the education cannot be transferable back to msian education system.

Yup staying in doha would grant you a better quality living. 2 hr drive to and fro is not too bad for the sake of your wife and kids.

thanks sfd for yr good advice. will look around 4 aptm in Doha, though i hate 2-hr daily driving to work then, but i agree with u that Doha is a better place to live. i will try to negotiate but many say don't try or hope too much. i want to push GIA since 1 of our msian fren got it! if i nego too much, it means i will just join australian-american engr co. based in KL :(

FYI-i m still waiting to be approved in Msian Community till i move to qatar.

My ADVISE is to gain experience first. I know what you are saying...Yes...your gaji is not lumayan..can you get equivalent offer here in msia?

My kudos to you for roughing it out in saudi..Not many ppl have that kind of stamina..

Hopefully with that experience you can sell yourself better in Msia...

sikit sikit ????

I believe "Malaysian" didn't get his 27k overnight...he would have slogged and sweat before getting there...so 23 good to aim high but no comparison...

wah wah wah 27 ribu sebulan, ceo class A contractor pun tak cecah banyak tue, tue laar kan hujan batu di negeri sendiri lagi baik, ko tak rasa suffer ker nanti dah balik msia dpt ker duit sebanyak tue unless kalo ko ada company sendiri? anyway, ko kejer oil n gas company ker? aku nak try gak masuk O&G nie walaupun degree aku civil, well cuma takder kabel jer sbb kelulusan lain kan, biaser laarr kiter kan nak masuk bidang2 lain tue sumer kene ada connection sket ataupun ader special skills yg lain2, tankiu laah sbb memberi sket gambaran kat sana, lain kali aku dpt offer pegi middle east lg aku pun kene pastikan gaji aku berpuluh ribu baru aku pegi muahahaha, at least puas hati laar jugak nak mengadap pak arab yg berbelit nie, neway kalo ko ada peluang yg bagus2 bleh laar ko emel aku [email protected], tak kesah laar peluang jadik aper pun O&G ker, construction ker, broadcasting ker, sajer jerr carik pengalaman tempat org, umur aku baru 23 beb! banyak lagi aku blum explore... slamat hari raya jugak....

Malaysian,

It is a wise decision.

Bagus le kalau dah reject offer tu, saya rasa keputusan anda satu keputusan yg bijak.

Saya orang Melayu yg datang kerja dgn company orang sini. Kalau nak datang sini sebenarnya banyak peluang tapi gaji tu biar le padan. Aku kat sini gaji sebulan 27 ribu.

Memang ler orang sini cakap mereka berbelit, macam Menteri Kerja Raya kita jugak.

Banyak jugak aku tengok bebudak UEM atau Gamuda yg datang sini tak tahan....especially yg bujang-bujang tu. Kat sini jauh beza dgn Malaysia. Malaysia jauh lebih baik.

Macam aku pun tak cadang nak duduk lama kat sini. Bila duit dah cukup aku pun nak balik.

Selamat Hari Raya.

Noble-man ;

ko nie org malaysia kejer sana ker? aper company ko kejer, Gamuda ker? actually aku dpt both offer, tp gamuda kasik lebih sket laar, well lebih mana pun, tak sampai QR3000. Apa salahnya aku buat kejer cacai even aku engineer, dulu time belajar slalu gak aper aku jadik waiter kat hotel, kejer 12 jam tp gaji RM50 jer, dah biasa dah aku idup makan nasik sehari sekali... :) Apa2 hal pun aku dah reject da offer sbb dlm forum nie pun dgn gaji yg aku stated akan dpt, tak ramai yg bleh encourage kan aku, lgpun aku tanya org2 kat sini yg dah ada pengalaman kejer kat middle east sumer tak encourage jugak instead of ada yg gaji lebat, tp working environment ta syok, sbb diorang kata pak arab nie takleh pakai, cakap berbelit, mauahahah betul ker? patut laar nak jadik bos jerr harap natural resources banyak tp suruh org luar buat kejer dlm negeri sendiri. So aku raser better aku stay jerr jadik engineer kat msia nie memajukan negara aku sendiri drp memajukan negara org.

sl ;

thanx for the info, anyway i have rejected the offer already because it seems nobody encourage me, i have search through internet and being discuss with my frenz here, QR10 000 is minimum salary that so called ok and u can grow up without suffering with the qatar live, and another info that i got from construction company in malaysia, nobody doing profit very well if they got project in middle east just because the arabian is not stable in their decision making... that's what i hear, n then it is rule of thumbs, i u work in any country in the world as long as u are contract worker,(not a big boss) u gain less salary compare to local for the same job position. So after i have think deeply, better i stay in Malaysia for the sake helping my country to grow up as well

Hi,

I moved here 2 years ago after spending 14 years in singapore. I really like to eat some Malay and Indonesian food here. Can someone give me the directions to find some restaurant serving these kind of food here in qatar.

Sorry, I forgot the name of the member who is a civil engineer going to work for a malaysian co. here. I am from the construction/consultant sector and my friend have some connections with the malaysian boss of the company. Are they a major player in highway construction. If it is, I am spot on. QR 2500 is a minimum for a junior engineer from India.

Post here, If you need more info about the construction industry here.

Hi Malaysian,

Some answers to your question :

1. I think your Malaysian employer is cruel ! It is hard to survive with QR 2,200/month,

even though accommodation & transport is provided. Saya rasa target saudara utk save QR 1,500 setiap bulan tak akan tercapai.

2. Food is expensive here unless you go for Beriyani in Indian shops which can cost about QR 8 per plate. Fast food like McDonald or KFC cost about 3x than prices in Malaysia.

Tapi takkan tiap-tiap hari nak makan Beriyani bang ooi.

3. You can find private clinics in Qatar but very expensive. It can cost 5x compared to Malaysia. You can go to Health Centres which will be much cheaper.

4. It cost QR 3.26/minute during peak and QR 2.96/minute outside peak to call Malaysia.

5. You're an Engineer you said....why do you want to become a Cleaner instead ?? Pick up some other part time jobs.

6. To use internet facility in Cyber cafe here cost about the same as back home.

Are you working for Gamuda or UEM ??

HI there, I'm British but have spent years in Indonesia + isteri saya juga orang Indonesia dari Kalimantan Timor. Kalau orang Qatar agak sombong sih, apalagi terhadap orang Asia. Ada yang jahat, ada yang baik, tapi hati2 aja.

There are Indonesian restaurants here but they charge quite a lot more than in Indonesia or Malaysia, and more than the local Indian restaurants. There is a good community of Indonesians here, but I don't know about Malaysians.

Buses costs 2 riyals in the city and 7 riyals out of it.

There are 4 seasons: not so hot, hot, very hot and very bloody hot.

The Indonesians here are always bringing tonnes of food and, bless them, Indonesian coffee for me so I don't think you'll have a problem there.

You'll have to take a test to obtain a Qatari driving licence - test costs 50 Riyals, 2 week driving course costs 650 riyals but in Al Rayyan they'll let you take the test straight away. (It's not easy, though!)

The electricity is 240 volts 50 hurts, like in the U.K.

hope that helps

hie qatar guest,

awak ni orang indonesia yeah? adakah sekarang anda bekerja di qatar, so far bagaimana penerimaan org qatar terhadap org seperti kita? adakah mereka memberi sepenuh perhatian apabila kita mempunyai masalah atau ingin bertanya sesuatu? adakah kedai yang menjual makanan indonesia atau makanan malaysia di sana? jika ada bagaimana harganya?

= how about the elctricity type in qatar is it :-

type D http://www.kropla.com/!d.htm

or type g http://www.kropla.com/!g.htm

= how much the intercity bus fare in qatar?

= i have malaysian car driving license, is it can use in qatar or i need to pay other fees or test?

= can somebody ramndomly brief the whether in qatar yearly....

= can i bring dry malaysian food to qatar? is there any restriction in doha international airport customs?

2. You can have a sandwich for about 2 riyals, eat a filling meal in an Indian restaurant for 7, or 5 for a vegetarian meal. I believe some people come to an arrangement where they pay a restaurant monthly, but you'd have to check this. Fresh orange juice costs about 4 riyals.

3. You don't need a private clinic, there are excellent government clinics. They cost 30 riyal for one visit or 100 riyals for a health card which will give you free treatment for a year. All emergency treatment is free, I know from experience. Qatar hospitals saved my son's life when he was suffering from meningitis, so I think they are pretty good.

4. Phone calls are prohibitively expensive - but you can use Skype which is normally much cheaper.

5. Many people have a second job - how legal it is I don't know/

Saya pernah ke Malaysia dan disitu jauh lebih murah daripada disini. Uang se banyak 2,200 tidak banyak disini, tetapi kalau anda hati2, saya yakin anda bisa simpan uang.

Good luck!

2) ok thanx for da info.... neway u know nasi lemak huh? are u

malaysian or have been to malaysia? but did qatar dun have a

restaurant such like indian style? or thai cook? if i cannot

reserve QR10 then if i dun wanna to cook how much should i spare

per day?

3) private clinic consultation fees just for QR 150?? thas not

including medicine rite?? heyy if i know this situation, i will

become a doctor in qatar man.... what is RP? is it easy to apply

medical card? does the government clinic open 24 hours or only

8am - 5pm 7 days per week? If i have the medical card then how

about the consultation and medicine fees?

4) Great to expensive... huhuhuhu my fiance will miss mu so much :(

5) yeah for sure i dun mind to do menial job, as before i have been

work as labour in my country, but how much is the salary let say

2. QR 10 a day you will have to cook your own. Do not compare food wise here with Malaysia. There is no proper foodcourt in Qatar. THe foodcourt here mostly just a bunch of fastfood like Mc.D, KFC, Hardees next to each other. You will not find nasi lemak for 3 QR. Mineral water in Qatar cost about the same in Malaysia.

3. For private clinic you will have to pay consultation fee around 100 QR to 150 QR. You can go to government clinic, you will have to apply your medical car once you get your RP. The cost of medical card last time i heard i think 100 QR per card (my husband company taking care of that).

4. Prepaid card for the initial fee cost around 250 QR to 300 QR, but sometimes Qtel have special offer.

5. There is opportunity to work part time as cleaner if you dont mind menial job. So far our cleaner come from hubby's office (tea boy or cleaner).

6.Internet cafe I think around 10 QR an hour.
