Driving Test

Hello, moving to Doha next month. Wanted to know if anyone had experienced tying to take a Driving Test in Doha. My wife wants to be more mobile, and with our children we're not to keen on taking taxis.

I have considered getting a driver, however i don't know how much they would cost..... or if i want my families safety in someone else's hands.

I'm not expecting lots of posts about the quality of driving in Doha as i know it's bad, but not much worse that Oman or UAE.

Many thanks in advance

as far as I have been involved in the process for getting a drivng license, US driving license is converted into Qatari Driving License without delay.

Best regards

In regards to your comment on US driving license...is it convertible to a Qatari license even though you have a RP from Qatar? Awaiting your response

Romanian and Hungarian licences are not accepted, we have to go to driving test, although they should accept. But for example cypriot driving licence is accepted immediately.

So to answer to the quaestion, I went to the driving test, it was very simple, they asked two symbol and I just had to tell the meaning, then we went for driving, I had to drive only around 1-200 metres and that was it.

European and American Licenses are well accepted, these are automatically endorsed here in Qatar

with all the details of requirements for getting a Qatari licence without the test. What I understand is that British/US and GCC licences are frequently accepted (if not always). It doesn't seem to depend on nationality - rather the country where the existing licence was obtained.

I am reasoning based on whatI've seen/heard so it may not be gospel truth.

Thanks, that sounds very similar to the process in Dubai, my wife doesn't have a license.

Although she may nave one by the time she joins me, I am British however my wife is Polish. Can she transfer as per British license holders?

Depending on nationality, if you have a licence from your home country, you may be issued with a Qatar licence immediately.

Failing that, you register with a driving school and take 12 or 25 lessons (12 if you have a licence, 25 if you don't).

You then do the test which is very simple (but takes half a day) and Bobs' your uncle.

The test process can be chaos though, as the organisational skills are non-existent.

Quality of driving is much worse than Oman or UAE. Thankfully due the heavy traffic, achievable speeds with in the city limits are pretty low. By and large, no culture of signaling and good road manners are almost absent.

Welcome to the roads of Doha!!!
