Why do so many people think adoption is haram in Islam? C'mon people...

You CAN adopt children. The rules are very different in Islam, but of course people do it.

Many expats adopt internationally (from China, Costa Rica, Ehtiopia, etc.) while living in Qatar (same as you would back home in your own country). Check with the agency you're working with re: rules you need to follow. You'll still need the same basic stuff (home visit report, background/police check, etc.).

There IS an orphanage here in Qatar -- called Dhreima, located behind the petrol station on Salwa Road, across from Ciao restaurant. Typically only Qataris adopt from there (as the orphans get Qatari citizenship from the Emir, as I understand it), but on rare occasions they have children for whom they actively seek expat adoptive families (for reasons they choose not to talk much about -- I imagine it's situations like a nanny gets pregnant from local or something similar). I am not sure if they mandate adoptive families be Muslims (again, I would imagine so as that seems pretty in line with sensibilities in this part of the world).
