I don't think more aggressive moderating is the answer. The way to stop an argumentative thread in it's tracks is to stop adding comments. Many of us (myself included) have commented just to have the last word and defend ourselves. Better to take the high ground and just ignore threads when they become petty. If people want to discuss the relative merits of different religions, argue over whether something is racist or not or trade childish insults then please do so outside of the public, rather than boring us all with it and ruining a perfectly interesting thread.
I've said it before but it's worth repeating - I know so many people who've come across QL one way or another but soon stopped using it because "it just seems to be full of a bunch of people arguing about irrelevant things". There is a wealth of useful information on here but it's hard to find it through all the sh*te.
From this day forward I will try and practice what I preach ;-)
