labda, I got my first cat from the SPCA. She was alone at home for about 1 year until I got my second cat. She didn't seem to "suffer" whilst being alone, though I wasn't there to verify! :)
I then got my second cat, a male kitten. At first she hated him, hissing and spitting all the time. But then she sort of took the "mommy" role and adopted him about 10 days later or so. Nowadays they're the best of buddies.
Cats sleep for most of the day anyway. I can see that when I'm home over the weekend.
I do think it's better to have two because they keep company to each other. But I don't think it's cruel to have only one. If you're thinking of getting only one I'd recommend getting a females first as they are easier to adapt to other cats.
And, no matter how many you get, you MUST castrate them! :)
Now, to get a cat or a kitten... It totally depends on you. My first one was already 7 months old when I got her. My second one was tiny, about 3 or 4 months. Kittens are a lot more work than grown cats because they want to play and play and play. But that can also be a blessing, because there's nothing cuter in the world than a playful kitten :)
