I think many of us are wondering about that, given recent crackdowns on things in Doha (Garvey's closing, membership requirements for clubs, etc.).

I am sensing a definite change in things here. Years ago, Qatar used to behave like KSA's little brother. Then they started flexing their muscles a bit and began showing more independence, turning more towards the Dubai model of things (though they were never quite that loose and open). Now it feels like they're clamping down again.

I guess stuff like this goes in waves in this part of the world. Society develops and becomes more open, then the religious right get irritated so they restrict things for awhile, then things relax a bit more...and back and forth.

I think we're in the "clamping down" phase at the moment.
So hang on -- it's going to be a bumpy ride!
