For me (and I think for most of us westerners) everyone and everything is fair game for criticism, humor, ridicule, etc. We talk about Catholic priests and Muslims equally, as well as women, gays, blondes, Jews, handicapped people, etc.
We are equal opportunity offenders! ;-)
But we're focussing on religion here...
Some people will definitely get upset, some will question the character or taste of the person making the offending remark. But bottom line for us is that you are free to think and say as you like (without inciting violence against someone).
Roadtester -- I take your point about the holocaust double standard. IMHO I would defend someone's right to say that they don't believe that it ever happened (even though I would think they were a sandwich shy of a picnic basket if they genuinely did). But they can say and think whatever they want. It's unfortunate that this isn't actually the case in Europe.
I remember when Iran sponsored the Holocaust cartooons, in retaliation for the Danish ones. Personally, I found it amusing...didn't get offended one bit.
