If you know 1 or 2 people even from work, get to a pub or something and just suss the people out and relax. See the vibes...Qatar socializing is very different!
My first couple of days, I lived at a coffee shop... just wanted to get the feel for people, see reactions, what they did, etc. Plus, got me feeling a little more comfy in surroundings.
Biggest warning: AVOID WHITE LANDCRUISERS!!! ACTUALLY, ANY LANDCRUISERS!!! I won't say anymore.
