With reference to the original post, caps on sprinkler nozzles is not always a bad thing - some models come with a protective cap that pops off when the sprinkler fires.

I'd say a lack of accessible and clearly signposted fire escapes will be top of my list of concerns in future - the only way to be really safe from a fire is to get away from it.
