Camaro Tires - only Pirelli is available?!
I am trying to replace all 4 tires of my 2010 Chevy Camaro. It originally came with Pirelli 245/ 50-19”. The only brand available in market (I have mainly searched on Salwa Rd) with exact specs is Pirelli but its pricey at QAR 1100 each. I am trying to find something cheaper than that.
Would it be advisable to put tires with slightly different specs. e.g. Dunlop 245/ 45-19” which is only QAR 750 each.
I appreciate any suggestions on what different specs can be used and what other shops/ markets should I explore to find the exact specs in any brand?
Thanks
In terms of simple physics F = V mu... If you double the contact area, then the pressure will halve (per mm2) so the friction per mm2 will halve. However, you have twice the area of contact patch so that cancels out the halved pressure. The conclusion is that basic friction is independent of area, it only needs vertical load and a co-coefficient. You can do whatever you want with the area from a stiletto to a surfboard, the friction force will be the same.
However life is more complex than simple physics. The most obvious point is that tyre rubber is adhesive, so if you double the area you double the amount of adhesion (gross approximation). So wide tyres do have more grip than thin tyres.
Many thanks guys. All of your help was much appreciated. You guys & Qatarliving Rock! Cheers
I would go for dunlop, japanese made and come stock on alot of toyotos, plus you would get a few more out of them then the no namer tires.
Thanks folks. Your comments are really helpful. So not going for Nexen Brit.
Khan. What matters more, width or height of tyre? In other words what is the variable which can be sacrificed over the other?
Don't go for Nexen.. Go for a recognised brand - especially given the weather conditions in Qatar
Consider example: 245/ 50-19 means:
245 = Width of your tire
50 = height of your tyre
19 = Rim size
You can choose any width and height provided rim size is 19''
For example AA/BB-19
In this case if you use 245/45-19 your tyre height is reduced by 5
No issue you can use them.

Thanks guys. Appreciate your feedback.
I agree, I am not going to be racing with these tires as my daily drive is for work from West Bay to La Cigale and back. And with the usual traffic jams on the roads, there's not much chance of putting the pedal to the metal! So Wild Turkey, your bottom line is that slight variation from standard specs wont cause much issues?
Good thing Dinding that you mentioned Nexen. A shop recommended me 255/45-19 for only QAR 530 each. Though I must admit I have never heard of the brand so have some doubts.
Another quick question: difference between width of 245 and 255 wont be much right?
iam using nexen korean made its cheaper and long lasting.
pirelli, bridgestone, michelin stands for brand name only
Since the speed limit in Qatar is 120 km/h virtually any 245/45-19 tire will do! No need to go for HR rated tires.
