Is traffic in Qatar really that bad?

A lot of us have been complaining about the traffic situation in Doha. But is it really that bad?

Yes, the traffic in Doha can be overwhelming at times, but not to an extend where it is utter chaos. Doha, fortunately, is not even in the top 10 list of the most traffic congested cities in the world.

According to a report from Sat Nav maker TomTom, the following are the most traffic congested cities in the world right now.

World’s top 10 most congested cities

1 – Moscow: with a congestion ranking of 74%

2 – Istanbul: 62%

3 – Rio de Janeiro: 55%

4 – Mexico City: 54%

5 – São Paulo: 46%

6 – Palermo: 39%

7 – Warsaw: 39%

8 – Rome: 37%

9 – Los Angeles: 36%

10 – Dublin: 35%

Percentages indicate how much longer it takes than free-flow traffic.

You might feel even better about traffic in Qatar after you watch this video driving in India.

@khaliwali...TFS...if you just posted that earlier....I would submit on already our argument. Its been 2 years since the article comes out. but you can hardly notice that it is in effect already. Go back to Muhammad experience yesterday. I would still choose to pass on right side, rather than to get annoyed by that idiot. he's running on 70kph....I will pass him by running maybe 85kph. I guess the police will know who the 2 of us is the violator of speed limit given. :P

@khalliwali. are you ok? its not a violation passing on the right side if it is a 2 lanes + 1 emergency lane. the violation is passing on the emergency lane on our right side.

@muhammed we can do a vigilant move. if we have cameras, we can record the situation then show it to the police. because driving in low speed beyond speed limit is a violation also. the penalty is QR300. But if we don't have time to do that.....just honkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk and do some hand gestures! lolz! but don't get involve to accident because its not only him will be affected...even you will. what is a minute delay to wait for clear right side so that we will be the one pass him @ right side. its just a matter of choice.

my suggestion is to adjust the timings of offices, schools , government sectors so we can reduce the traffic. main problem we suffer is that of traffic jam.

many countries they have changed the working hours and in turn they got the result. eg. afternoon between 1.o clock to 2.30.

@Knor: yesterday when I was going towards home after work I faced this situation.. speed limit was 100Kph and one guy in front of me on fast lane was driving at a speed of 70kph what to do now and there was a more space on the right lane then their was a bus I flashed him he didn't move I got closer he didn't move then tell me what to do ??? and one more thing in front of him there was no vehicle within 6km..

and driving slow in fast lane this is also a violation..

knor: first off, i'm very sorry for my earlier rudeness; had just returned from a frustrating drive myself so lost it here with you, but that's no excuse for the rudeness..i'm a fast but pretty considerate and polite driver myself, with a few parking violations..point is, if someone wants to pass and you can safely move over for them, please do so..i would and you've said you would too..so yeah..but hey i love your idea of a dedicated fast lane; can I have two lanes please? :-)

By knor• 4 Jun 2014 21:37

lolz.....mohdata, there is a police in civilian cloths behind you. and he is taking note of your plate number for rash driving.

anyway! we do understand that we need to give way to the drivers like you and Qatari_a. But you need also to understand and read the situations......how the hell can we give way quickly when in our left side is the railings and in our right side are the trucks and buses? hopefully in the near future, all highways in Qatar are 4-lanes + 1 emergency lane. 1 lane is for the drivers like you, 1 lane is for the trucks and buses and the center 2 lanes are for the law abiding drivers.

By mohdata• 4 Jun 2014 16:50

knor: its not locals vs expats he is complaining about..its slow people in the fast lane that he and EVERYONE hates...its a simple concept..regardless of speed limit; there's a faster car behind you in the overtaking lane..you move!!!!!....its common f****** sense!!!!!!!...god just typing that is making me pound the keyboard!!!...move guys move why the hell won't you move????!!!!!

seriously stop making fools of yourselves guys...as far as the driving goes, i will always side with the Qataris..not Arabs but Qataris..the fast drivers are much less of a nuisance than the slow ones..half the rash moves by fast drivers are because the slow ones won't move out of the fast lane. I get flashed by Cruisers all the time..guess what I do?..I MOVE!

driving is an attitude. as with some people, they either have a good or a bad one. you can't teach good (driving) attitude in driving schools either. so the only thing we can do, is to stay alert & remind ourselves that we chose to live in this country where primitive driving habits is a majority almost a standard.

funny thing though... i drive a land cruiser though i'm not "from here". i just notice that when i shift to the leftmost lane, cars in front of me started moving off quickly... i wish i could tell them "hey brother, i'm in no rush & im not who you think i am." cheers!

MOST arabs driving land cruisers, bmws, mercedes, lexus, prados are the one should be called *****, when u drive a normal car they will keep on flashing you even max speed is already there, accept the fact and this is the reality

@Qatari_a maybe the speed limit on that road is 60KPH that's why he's just driving @ 50. But what is your opinion on this scenario: Its 6:30am rush hour at mesaieed road, its a 2-lane with emergency lane(+1). the speed limit is 120KPH....and mostly are driving 110-120. And here comes an arab looking guy driving his Silverado/land cruiser/H3. Flashing his headlight...tailgating if the one in front cannot giveway quickly. If he can't pass by using his headlight and honking, he will swerve to emergency lane and enter again, making a sharp cut to those running @ 120. Do you think it is right practice of driving? You know what mr Qatari_a? you may right on those expats that don't know how to drive well. But you don't have a right also to put others life in danger. If you have too much money to pay for overspeeding and you don't mind on getting involve in accident, maybe its the time for this country to segregate the expats and locals on the road.

By paulobanez• 4 Jun 2014 14:09

No offense but many expats drive at the outer lane at the low speed while it is for overtaking and high speed. Stupid drivers though. Many expats do not know how to drive well. Poor drivers. But i encounter some are good though. The one poor driver please drive right side and don't go left side. They are deserved a Honk and hazard's light why drive at the wrong lane. People who drive fast surely no congestion. One driver slow in front, drive at 50km/h other drivers also slow behind drive at 40km/h and how many cars behind? This is what makes road jammed. Don't like the road here can go back to your country who is better.

The attitude of some drivers needs changing. Driving less than 2 feet from the car in front at 100 km/h flashing lights and intimidating. Especially when it is clear that the car in front is passing slower moving traffic. What about blocking off a live lane to try to shove in at the front of a queue, or even the middle of one? How many family's drive with children Un-restrained by safety belts? I have seen lady passengers with children on their knees, children stood on the front passenger seat, whilst hanging out the window. I have even seen, on 2 occasions, men driving whilst cradling a baby in their arms. Madness is too polite a word.

At least they keep moving even without signal or traffic police.Unlike in Doha wherein if there is a traffic there is a police & if there is a police then there have a traffic. I thinks the traffic here is not bad domestically, it is WORST!!!

its not about the ranking you cannot compare Moscow to Qatar Moscow is the size of Qatar we are talking about such a small city like Doha that has such traffic not because its a huge city is just because infrastructures are poorly done....so if it was in the ranking that would have been a disaster specially its a plain area of land!!!!!

some specific locations and times. I believe one more reason adds on to the congestion in the morning and evening. here very few parents send their kids by school bus. most prefer to drop and pick them themselves. result- traffic jams in peak hours. that's why you never encounter or experience very less jams during school vacations. moreover, some families do even have different car for each kid. this also adds to some extent.

as per the traffic arrangements in qatar there is no chance of traffic jam if people obey the correct rules and driving rules.but people are not trying to make proper line traffic and cooperation with others. everyone is busy and selfish.

I believe the traffic congestion is not that bad compared to what I have experienced in Saudi..... except peak hours and at specific locations.... But as mohdata said: If you are a regular traveller, you'll find a way to manage that. Atleast its very good that I haven't seen or its unusual that a teenage is driving on the streets here in doha.................

Police is much more active and thanks to cameras installed at frequent intervals....... I believe if the mass transit system is deployed in Qatar (like Metro and other projects, the situation can improve alot....)

I've been to 3 of the cities in the list. Yes there is congestion but not the chaos one encounters every day here. They don't drive on the pavements or jump the curbs either. As for the video, as the previous poster said it is sped up and doesn't have the number of cars that one encounters at every major intersection in Doha.

the video is not in right spirit as it is edited to fast mode. even pedestrians are running
