used car purchase : Milege or year of manufacture?

I get confused while looking for used car price. Do we have to look for the year of manufacture or the total KM? Most of the mainteance intervel is based on the kilometer . Also logically the wear and tear is based on KM. Why should we look into the year of manufacture?

@techn.. for inspection, visit the company service center. They will give you the complete estimate for a cost of around 500Qr.

If you can see any leak from underneath you should be careful. It shows little or no maintenance has been done.

What exactly are they doing at the "inspection"? They hook their OBDII scanner (you can buy one for about QR 500) to your car and read the error codes stored in the car's computer memory. You can do that yourself. And if you take your car to a wheel alignment shop (QR 250) they will tell you if the chassis or the frame is straight or not.

While the inspections done at the centers on Salwa Road, may provide you valuable information on the overall condition of the car, they will not be able to give you a 100% accurate result as stated by britexpat. When you buy a second-hand car, it does demand some bits of expenses here and there later on. It is only after you have used the car for sometime that you gradually get to know of its problems. I had made a simple rule for myself. I used to put aside QR 500 each month for car maintenance, although it was not always I got to spend this money every month.

Buying used Cars here is just simply finding your luck.

You cannot simply rely on Testing co. and or the sellers words.

BUT sometimes an honest sellers word is more than enough if he/she really cares and personally use the car and treat them like a baby.

Brit is right, I dont think these testing inspections here can be trusted that much, as per my personal experienced; I sell a car a year back which also I bought here in QL different buyers insist to bring it to one of the popular computer & Testing co. and I was really surprised with totally different results with the same Testing Co and ended up selling my car in bit low price.

Will they detect all possible defects ? I doubt it. They will however give you a good idea of the state of the car.

Thanks for all your expert comments. If I decide to purchase used car, can I trust the inspection done at the car testing service in Salwa road? Will they detect all possible defects?

All I've said above doesn't apply if you can afford to buy a new car every year. They all make it one year.

Some older cars are better than new ones. But that is a matter of knowledge. If an engine runs trouble-free for 350,000 km it will probably do so for another 200,000 km. A 5.7 liter V 8 engine easily runs well for 500,000 km. A 1.8 liter engine hardly makes it to 200,000 km. That's a consequence of the rpm the engine is run at to achieve its nominal power. A diesel engine for a ship seldom runs above 1,000 rpm. These engines live for a million or even two million km. What generally is a concern in Qatar is the suspension because of the dead bad roads! Another general concern is the cooling of the engine. Generally heat is a killer for an engine. So, if you're looking for a big engine (more than 4 liters) chances are that you won't have a major problem with the motor. The cooling system, water pump and radiator, including the fans should be working. Most importantly check for wheel alignment, tire balance, and drive shaft issues. That's what most used cars suffer from. The extensive summer heat can also influence the performance of all the electronic modules in modern cars. That's why I would always go for an old car. The older, the better!

Car Price is purely based on those who how caring their vehicles..! Indeed Manufacturing year and the ODO reading also a factor of price.

1. There is very less people here caring their car very much. We can find less than 3 year old vehicles with less ODO reading are on the higher price range because the wear and tear is minimal and comparatively new model.

At the same time, rent a car companies, leasing companies, Limousine services, Taxis also will fall under the 3 year age limit but the kilometers are much higher than normal vehicles. Also the drivers will be frequently changing on such vehicles, so the care will be very very less.

If you decided to buy any vehicle, a thorough checkup is a must. For example, when driving a vehicle you cannot find anything abnormal. But, in detailed check you may find head cracks, chasis bends, leaks, accidents, like serious issues...

2. Its a crime tampering ODO reading in Qatar, but on personal influence, might be somebody will do the ODO tampering of old vehicles. So, looking ODO is not advisable.

3. Buying more than 5 year old vehicle may raise the issues like head gasket blowing, oil leaks, gear issues, ac gas leakage, vibrations, dirty interior and more than that frequent wiring/ circuit troubles.

My advice is, if you find any used vehicle of your choice, better take that vehicle to the official authorized service center for a complete checkup. They can analyze, identify, advice you more than that of any third party auto techs'.

Best of luck.

Usually, the year of manufacture gives you two indications. If the car is a recent model and has clocked a very high kilometer, it suggest the car has been always on the roads. This is the case with taxis or cars owned by companies for general use. Secondly, if a car is a recent model, you have better chances of reselling it faster than older models. Also, some insurance companies hesitate in providing comprehensive insurance cover to cars which are over five years old.
