Why are Qatari Vehicle License Plates different sizes?

Why are some vehicle license/number plates a long and skinny (euro style) and some are a short rectangle (North America Style)?

Also, for example I currently have a euro style plate but would like an American styled one - Can I switch?

Remember Qatar imports everything, ok maybe, apart from orange juice and eggs.It is to do with the region from which the car is imported, for example from the US the number plates are rectangular whereas UK ones are long. As a result the number plates have to adopted to suit the premade impressions already on the cars.Maybe the number plates are imported too!
