don't be surprised as previously stated, I do not go out to clubs and don't associate with people who use slang in a derogatory manor.

I am surprised that you don't know how easy it is to misinterpret the usage of the word "Bag" ;o(

Britexpat, how? always curious as to how subjects up for discussion are so misinterpreted.

Its been a while since I have been to a night club. What do the words, Shopping, bags, recycling & charging got to do with it?

Tracy, I hate to burst your people but I don't think recycling bins anywhere here means the rubbish actually gets recycled.

I saw the bins at Katara and wasn't sure. So I e-mailed them a few weeks ago and they 'weren't sure' and they refused to confirm that the rubbish is recycled. In other words, I'm 99% sure it just gets collected along with all the other rubbish.

It's the same with the recycling bins in our company. I know for a fact that anything that goes into them is not recycled. We do not have the facilities here.

I suspect that there is actually no recycling facilities at all for household rubbish anywhere in Qatar (and thi, only for companies that produce huge amounts of waste.

So I gave up in the end, and everything just goes down the garbage chute :(

Watch out we could be starting a movement here!

lets hope there are more and more of us who show we care about our environment.

ps I also reuse the small plastic bags for bin liners.

I recycle glass, plastic, paper & cans at Katara village, we get a few funny looks from the staff but as I said the more of us that do it the move facilities will become available.

There are also bins at the British embassy car park and Bida park. ~I've no idea how often they are emptied and there are only 3 at each sit but it's a start. I

I agree, the majority of people cannot be bothered to make an effort when the plastic bags are easily and FREE-ly available. Perhaps it would be an incentive if supermarkets started charging QR1/- per plastic bag. Even if it didn't encourage more people to bring their own bags, I am sure it would cut down the use of plastic bags, drastically! Sometimes I see people leaving grocery stores with 3-5, sometimes more plastics bags, most of which are half empty.

I am glad to see that there are some people who follow what they believe in, and do bring their bags and like Tracy says, you can even cut down on your fruit & vegetable plastic bags by simply sticking price tags onto your fruit/veg, or you can wheigh them all separately, put into one bag and then get all the pricetags on the same bag.

P.S. Later you can use these plastic bags as bin liners for small bins or think of other options to reuse them before you dispose of them.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle :)

At Tracy.C.Marriott - I am up to that... perhaps, you could lead the way? :)

They should minimize the use of plastics in the supermarkets or shops/stores here.

The only way to make stores change is to show a demand by its customers.

Perhaps all like minded people who care on QL can lead the way?

How about Supermarkets start using paper bag/recyclable bags instead of using plastics?

I take all my own bags with me and have done for around 25 years now. I have around 20 assorted sizes and styles, including cool bags for cold and frozen goods. If you are combining food shopping with other shopping then make use of the stores storage section for keeping your bags until you are ready to enter the supermarket. I also try to cut down on the plastic for my fruit & veg by multi bagging items and getting labels put on larger items i.e peppers, aubergines etc.. I always have a fold up bag in my handbag for those odd items I need to pick up.

in answer to the above comment, charging for plastic bags is the only way to make people who don't care about the environment notice there is a cost to producing and overusing plastic!

Sri Lanka started doing that a few years back too and I hear it was quite effective though of course there was plenty of ranting! Still no one likes to spend for bags every time they shopped considering the already soaring cost of living, hence reusing became a must.If you leave it to choice then I hardly see many "green" minded, Eco friendly folk around willing to go through the "hardship" of remembering to bring their bags!

Well, do what they do in Europe..charge for the plastic bags..soon enough only a few people will use them ;)

hi mariecor, thank you for the feedback. I agree, it might be a bit of a hassle to carry your bag along with you, as ladies handbags never have enough space anyway! However, if you know you are going shopping, just take your wallet, your keyes and whatever else you normally carry with you and keep them in the bag, so it will serve as handbag and also as a shopping bag!!! And if you have a pretty bag with long handles, it is also more comfortable to carry the bag, you can carry it just over your shoulder :)

It is really an hassle for most of us to bring canvas bags everytime we shop. If there will still be plastic bags provided in the shop, why will I bother to bring my own?

For me, the only way to be successful in this program is to stop all the supermarkets giving or selling plastic bags to encourage the customer to bring his/ her own canvas bag.
