Carrefour eggs - warning
I was just in Landmark C4 and needed eggs. I don't normally shop here but I needed some things and could not be bothered to go to M/Mart. The eggs I first took a look at were packed on 24th May and I thought are there not some a bit fresher. Not only were these the 'freshest' eggs available but I saw some packed on 10th March and not just the odd box. Some packed at the beginning of April too.
How can they justify trying to sell eggs that were laid almost 3 months ago! Heaven help the person who does not notice the package date and buys them.
You have been warned!!
Runner which bread was that.?
What ever...........
One can't compare Qatari eggs with those '4Cornered' eggs sold at C4 !
..... atleast eggs should look like eggs .. no ?
To MM and Flor - job accomplished, people have read this and either agreed or have taken the advice not to go. That was my aim and it was successful.
And no flor, I will not be buying eggs from C4 again, i have lived here 4 years and have purchased them 3x from said supermarket, there are other placed to go.
They produce eggs here? Where???
No, MM. It's only an advice. Eggs at Carrefour (Landmark) often are well over three or four weeks old. It makes me vomit to read the expiry dates alone. But the cheaper and uglier Qatari eggs are fresh.
Your post qualifies for classifieds, I suppose.
Anyway useful info.
Buy Qatari eggs, They normally (even at Carrefour) are not older than one week!
Baladiya should be more concerned with these items instead of things like salt and water (the dumbest thing in the world... expiry dates on salt, water, sugar and spices).
I made a test some time ago:
Bought a sliced bread... kept it in the kitchen counter for 3 months... after that i opened the pack (which was not hermetically sealed) and guess what? The bread was perfectly fine... just like the fries and burgers from McDump and BK after 3 months in the same conditions (temperature between 25 and 35 celsius, air humidity 10-20% - all of these increased when someone was cooking)
'......i have stopped bothering but I find it way more effective to post something like this on QL - it shames them more and hits them where it hurts, loss of custom!.'
Wrong approach won't get you anywhere.
People may take it as a personal grumbling due to hot dusty weather, traffic jam, not getting salary on time among others.
there are production date and expiry dates clearly mentioned in all packs. If you find an item that is rotten, you can always complain to the consumer dept whose telephone numbers are pasted in every supermarket. They will take immediate action...
Its summer time, better , eggs should be avoided !
thank for the reminder.. :)
3 months for an egg is too long.
usually eggs shelve life should not exceed 2 weeks.
Visited AL Meera (Dasman) branch last day. Found milks packed on 20+ march. what about this??
Well, thinking, in general, is not very common I am afraid.
And I'm afraid I don't buy perishable goods from small stores since I heard a manager say that he always turned off the power at night in the store to save electricity! Think of the frozen goods :(
Mandi
consumer protection (?). Try it, maybe this time, it work. M A Y B E!
I bet jjj, you'll go back there and buy eggs again. Of course, another brand and you will look for the expiration as you always do. How many customers lost? You think they would bother?
So many threads about this have been posted here before, did anything change?
Or you are waiting for IKEA? Do they have fresh eggs? Lol! Joke!
CARRE FOUR IS VERY LOW QUALITY!! AND HIGH PRICED!!!the dollar store in the states is 10X cheaper and 10x better quality!!!
Not only Carrefour...went to luLu today, it was a disgrace! Usually it's better than the others...not so today.
For, LOL! We should complain? To who exactly? When you are already looking at being stuck in a 30 minute wait to see a cashier, do you think anyone could be bothered to try and hunt down anyone in Carrefour with either the brains or responsibility to do anything about their produce?
Next time I see:
rotting onions
limp, half dead herbs
tomatoes and other soft fruit with patches of mould
milk and dairy on the front of the refrigerated shelf that has warmed to almost room temperature
eggs that are old
I can either look for fresher stuff hidden deeper in the display, or
complain.
Personally I have better things to do with my time than fight the Doha mentality of shop management and attempt to lodge a (pointless) complaint. Carrefour has been selling bits of crap for years. Why will they change now?
Reason why whenever i buy stuff specially to small stores here in Qatar, I make sure to look for expiration date of the product. Good thing to practice since we cannot do anything about this.
Does Carrefour only sell white eggs :o)
Flor- give it a rest, if you don't believe me, the brand name is Tregor and they are free range eggs from france. I used to complain about stuff, nothing happens, why bother. All that happens is that they may remove the product but then start doing it all over again the following day. I know someone who bought a computer from C4, and found a couple of things wrong with it- packaging or missing part or something but upon closer inspection someone had bought it before and loaded software etc. So clearly when a defective product is brought back, it is just put back on the shelf. As I said, why bother?
If you go to any store in Qatar you can find things that are rotten, moldy and past their sell by date.
Oh, and if you point it out to a sales person, they will look at you blankly, take the item and put it back on the shelf.
If you then go the manager, they will apologize, talk to the sales person in their language, hand you a new item, and when they think you are gone, put the off item back on the shelf.
That;s how this works .
from Carrefour City Center.
They were from KSA. I always buy the UAE ones now...and also look well at the date on the box. Lesson learned.
at least to be fair with you. If I find something like that, I will complain directly.
So you think all that would read this will believe you? I believe you first, but now you did admit that you chose to write it here rather than (or on top of) complaining directly, I am having a serious doubt or at least a second thought!
I have complained about this sort of thing before, nothing ever happens - this is Qatar after all. i have stopped bothering but I find it way more effective to post something like this on QL - it shames them more and hits them where it hurts, loss of custom!
they should be informed! If it is an honest mistake, they should allowed recall. If not, then they have to do some adjustment in their quality control or procedures.
i agree with TB...buying things which is fully aware that it should be off then complaining after bringing it home...
I just got all the way to Carrefour with my cup of water only to find it evaporated
I get very angry with myself when I buy something without checking the expiration date and get it home only to throw it out.
Mandi
I'm going with sheer stupidity
Anyhow, it is either sheer greed - ie they are not allowed to throw anything away or sheer stupidity that they would risk illness by clearly selling something that is well past it's sell by date and thus has the potential of making people very ill indeed???
Villagio is still not accessible.
Some transferred Villagio eggs.... Hmmmm...
(Simpers) Thank you!~
Mandi
bilber.... Mandi's knight in shining armour there to defend her with is life.
Have at yah jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj
Bilber - ever heard of sarcasm??
no offense and am not trying to defend mandi..i think she agreed with your assumption that eggs which are 3 months old should be discarded...she's just trying to be helpful and giving tips that most of us don't know...a bit of appreciation i guess is more appropriate.
No wonder they don't allow photography in their stores.
Thanks jjj and thanks Mandi!
Mandi - can save you the trouble. Any egg that is 3 months old is bound to be off!
There's a way to test for an egg's freshness. Place it in a cup of water, if it floats it's bad.
