It's the news so many of you have been waiting for;

The Swedish furniture chain Ikea is going to expand in the Gulf region and plans to open two new stores in Oman and Qatar, the company's country operations and project manager in Dubai, Siddarth Bhide, told Gulf News.

Now I'm confident that if I ever have grandchildren, and if one of them happens to get a job in Doha, then he would find IKEA to help him furnish his new home :D

Exactly - you get what you pay for. For the price you pay you don't expect the furniture to last more than 2 or 3 years, which is what it has always done in my experience, if not longer.

In the UK it's a god-send for students, first time buyers, or anyone on a budget.

You could call them up or even get in touch with them through their website. You need to plan for 2010. Place your order now and you will be lucky to have them shipped at least by then ...

Ikea stuff are garbage, considering i'm from the states i can say that with great confidence. They use rubbish wood on their furniture. Although their price maybe amazing, their quailty may not be.

These guys don't pay salaries on time. My BIL works for IKEA Dubai and he once did not get paid for almost 3 months and he has not yet received his current salary. They canceled his family status and piggy backed on "CRISES". Well, it surely was not his performance and if it was he would not be getting the employee of the month "CERTIFICATE" a few months ago. CRAP.

Their reason was "Economic Crisis". I guess they've got enough money to pay.

I ordered for IKEA stuff almost a month ago. The stocks they said would be available in two to three weeks, aparently might reach IKEA Dubai by the 10th of this month. Which makes it almost 4 weeks.

I have no idea whats happening and who's responsible. When I asked for a refund, their answer "IT WILL TAKE 25 DAYS FOR THE REFUND". So I decided to wait.

Their own stupid rules and a bunch of Idiots that exploits labor to its max.

Well, the only thing that grabbed my attention there is the lighting. They do have variety if you’re into post modern/minimalist decoration. Last year I bought indirect lights for the stairs from their Dubai store.

I have to admit that once it’s open it will take Doha by storm. I just hate admitting that I had to go to “life style” to get a books holders. I end up buying two golden elephants that appears to be used as book holders (not exactly what I had in mind). But that’s the best you can get in Doha, I guess

Or else I will have to start building the monument myself...lol

That's the point genesis. Cheap, reasonable quality furniture and household goods. Ideal for kitting out a house when you're only staying for a couple of years. Expats will love it. And I bet locals will too, judging from the number I see shopping in Home Center. Ikea will blow Home Center out of the water.

Tallg.. Hope its cheaper than home center.. But let's just all wait and see.. But I guess, whatever is its price, the value of your money that will be spent for IKEA is worth it (based from my experience with IKEA).. But knowing the rental cost of land (storage cost) here is too costly, plus handling cost.. im sure they will come up with a good strategy for that matter to be competitive .. ANd they definitely know that the buying power of locals and expatriates here are very high... so my assumption is... it will be quite expensive than Dubai Ikea, and almost the same price with Home Center...

PS...

The target market (niche) of IKEA here in Qatar is US... the expatriates.. who will not stay here for LIFE..

IKEA has been "coming to Doha" for more than 5 years now...their global store guidelines state that they need a certain minimum amount of space for a store & that minimum is quite a bit as they they have the store & warehouse together concept,to enable the customer to pick up something as soon as they see it & not have to wait for it to come from the warehouse...i.e they require a fairly large amount of land or built-up area, which they can't find @ the right price anymore, considering the current cost of land in Doha...so unless any of you have a huge piece of land lying around that you could offer them @ the right price, they're not coming here anytime soon...sorry (:...

For me Ikea furniture is associated with the Prefab PANEL HOMES. Home built of panels looks LIKE a home, but it’s not the real one.. same with IKEA furniture.. like pre-fab house, IKEA furniture is assembled of boards.. it LOOKS like a furniture. But it’s not.. :)

I like their other home stuff though... modern, light simple style..

The quality of IKEA furniture is high compared to a lot of the crap you get out here. I've had pieces of IKEA furniture that have lasted for many many years, including beds, wardrobes, shelving units, tables.

The only time the quality deteriorates is if you take then apart and put them back together again.
