How PATHETIC is Carrefour???

We bought a toaster 3 days ago at Carrefour City Centre, only to find that it doesn't work (i.e. DOA).

Seeing we were in Landmark area yesterday, thought we'd return it at Carrefour Landmark for another brand.

Guess what? "No, you cannot bring this back here, you have to take it back to City Centre..." was the response from the ever-helpful-NOT "Customer Service Centre". The (pathetic) reason (or EXCUSE)? The brand we bought is not stock at the Landmark branch and that each store source from different suppliers. Huh? - Does it mean Carrefour are not related to each other? Or that Carrefour is simply too lazy to cooperate - Now, that's PATHETIC!!!

Given that all Carrefour in Qatar is owned by "Majid Al Futtaim", we are bewildered that they do have a network system (like all other international companies do) linking and communicating between all stores?

If this is how customers are being treated, you can rest assured that you will have one customer less to shop.

And that's my experience. Feel free to share your BAD experience on the PATHETIC service you received from Carrefour...

@ Agnostic1224,the world doesn't function on the "it's common sense so you should return the item to the same branch you bought it from" mate...if they expect you to return to the same branch, they HAVE TO state that on the receipt, that is my right as a paying customer, if not elsewhere in the REAL WORLD,this person could sue Carrefour for wasting his/her time,THAT is REAL customer service, just because one has gotten used to the shittiest customer service on the planet here in the mideast does not mean, this is how it is EVERYWHERE mate,i agree that it ought to be returned to the same branch due to stock or supplier issues or whatever BUT it is my right that they state that clearly on the reciept,"it's just common sense" makes no sense, what if i'm mentally handicapped & lack common sense???...am i supposed to go ALL the way to one outlet in this traffic only to be told it has to be returned @ the outlet of purchase when i get there?...what about the time i've lost driving to the 1st outlet? or is there no value for my time?...c'mon mate, this isn't how things function in the REAL WORLD,that's the fact of the matter, like or not, that is how it is,customer service in this country is not bad...it's NON EXISTANT,now for people who haven't experienced REAL customer service that may not be much of an issue, take what they give you, wheather you like it or not,pay for it & go home but for those of us that are used to REAL customer service,it can be pretty hard to deal with the complete lack of it here...

Nothing wrong in this... dont waste our time by posting these questions.... The customer service guy was right... return the faulty toaster to the same place you purchased it from... tomorrow you will buy some item from elsewhere in the world... and you will want to return it elsewhere in the world... I am sorry.. it is not possible....

I will agree with a single point that Donisgood made & that is that if they expect you to return it to the same branch,it should say so on the receipt, plain & simple, now really is that so hard to do..."goods/electronic goods may only be exchanged/returned at outlet of purchase."...how very hard is it to print that on the receipt???...not hard @ all,if they expect me to return/exchange it @ the same outlet,it's my right that they put it in writing 'cos if they don't an automatic assumption can be that it may be returned @ any outlet...i believe that's only fair...

But if we were to return a piece of cloth to a from any store, I think we can do so at any branch without any problem.

Maybe its a rule Carrefour should follow, I dont think its pathetic, its just an annoying rule.

dyonski I don't think this has anything to do with their own item or not! When you buy something somewhere you should be able to return it back in any other branch they have, unless it’s stated in their receipt.

"I actually did return an Armani shirt to another outlet, but in but in Australia! And the salesgirl was happy to do it with a SMILE!"

because armani have their own item which is armani.and carrefour dealing with different items like philips,b&d, braun, etc.in other case if you bought carrefour items like C4line maybe they can change it easily and in any branch.

dude, have you ever heard of the word "INVENTORY"? carrefour has the same products, sure, but, hello? they're different branches. so they have different inventory stocks. common sense much?

I think everybody was right.. go to the place where you exactly bought the item.

You're not in Australia anymore. What else do you want?? Winter in August??

p.s. Sorry for plagiarizing your original post, but except for the last sentence, this is in your own words.

this is largely a Continental thing, where you can return things to any store and of course it works.

if you holidayed in the North of England and bought an item from a nation-wide chain of stores, went back down South, and then encountered a problem with it, should you be expected to travel the 5 hours again to take it back to its origin?

of course not!

In some ways it is the people that lay down and drive back to the store; without kicking up a fuss, that enable these places to keep asserting their rules as they do.

And yes 'pack your bags and go home'. VERY helpful 'advice'.

So now when anyone starts a thread about driving, the government, religion, rude people in Qatar, the heat etc etc, there should only be one reply saying 'IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GO HOME'?

this website wouldn't last 5 minutes.

Idiots.

By hannah981• 14 Aug 2009 13:48
hannah981

since when does a bit of frustration mean you need to pack your bags?

Get your point about applebees but if you have one bad experience and then never go somewhere again it seems you are a little more frustrated than me! The comment earlier about competition also is a valid one. If Donisgood was to say I'll never go to carrefour again then they would really cut down their options as there aren't a lot of supermarket chains out here, whereas there are plenty of alternatives to Applebees are there not?!

By ij_ahmad• 14 Aug 2009 13:38
ij_ahmad

Firstly, welcome to Qatar!

Secondly, its the same in every shop, so if you have high expectations of customer service in this country, it may be time to pack your bags. Reasonable customer service exists, but excellent service is hard to find.

Thirdly, if you are unhappy with a product, just stop going there. Applebees really wound me up by taking 1 hour 20 mins to bring my food, so I will never eat there again. I'll go to Chillis or Ponderosa or Bennigans or Nandos or... get my point?

By hannah981• 14 Aug 2009 13:20
hannah981

I agree that you should be able to take it back to any store Im afraid! The problem is that the guys at customer service have one rule and that is to follow the rules. In other countries people are expected to think outside the box whereas in my experience, things dont work that way here. Customer services did what they are told to do, plain and simple and we all know that getting angry at them will get you nowhere. When the problem is simple they can cope no problem and are fantastic but when something unusal happens - like this incident, they have no protocol for that and instead of saying I'll see what I can do, they just say no. In fairness to them they'd probably get sacked if they did do that here! It just grates when you find things are different to what you are used to. To all the peolpe who at this point will say go home then, that's not the point, it takes time to adjust and that is sometimes frustrating. It would be exactly the same if you went to our countries. Its funny how people jump on the band wagon and tell Donisggod to chill out and calm down. We all get frustrated by small things at times, its part of life especailly when you move countries. I share your frustration Donisgood!

anyway, if you don't like it and not satisfied with it, as long as you have the receipt then just return it and change it to other brand...same amount...SIMPLE...

Carrfour has a pretty decent Customer Service, Just yesterday i bought a indoor BBQ Grill of some Chinese make "First". I physically looked at the packing it seemed unopened and new. I took it home in the night. assembled it the same night and It does not work !!

I did not get upset, as it happens as its an electronic item.

Went there in the morning, gave it back, got an apology from the Customer Service, asked me what would i like to do, take a replacement, Shop for something else or Refund.

I opted for refund and not a single question asked they accepted the package with trust and gave me full refund.

Imagine this happens in Lulu, they will skin you alive and will blame you for damaging the items and its packing !

For me carrfour is pretty good.

What do you expect? Do you want them to open each and every electrical item and check it before it goes on their shelf?

Get a Grip and Chill !!

The reason they gave a S*** about taking the product back from you is because they do not have much competition, if you were living in a competitive market where every customer's purchases make a difference then that same salesman would have been trained on how not to say "NO" to a customer ie:He could have contacted the city center branch come up with a solution, accepted the exchange of your product and then dealt with the other branch in settling the accounts and voila Carrefour would have one more very happy customer who would probably lure more people to their business.

I personally have had problems with electronic items purchased from Carrefour, not once but thrice, eventually you have to take the product your self to the dealership to get the deal on the warranty, so I have stopped electronics from them, don't know what's the deal on the quality of the electronics they stock.

nothing pathetic about the way the carrefour staff handled your situation but it's more pathetic to know that you are over reacting to such an extent. perhaps it works where you came from to which you should just pack up and head back to where things could go your way.

There have been many complaints against the services of Carrefour for the longest time. I wish some gets even resolved. I hope they prioritize on their staff.

I agree with other members. There is nothing wrong with returning it to the same store you bought it from. What will you do if they had a no exchange/refund policy? LOL -- you should take it easy. Plus you think this Al Futtaim gives a crap about all these complaints? I'm sure they have other better things to do.

I never buy from Carrefour anything; especially electronics. I bought my things from Al Darwish - Kenwood and they are all working GREAT!! Next time you should think twice before buying anything from them :)

Carrefour is not manufacturer of this product & nor they test each item before accepting for sale. Each carrefour outlet may have been set up as a profit centre with responsibility for outsourcing local supplies.

maybe you have to return it to the same store you got it from, because of the balancing of their accounts, who knows!?

Anyways I always thought , carrefour is carrefoure, but it's not really, one carrefour was selling a computer chair for 130 QAR and on the same day we happen to go by an other carrefoure and it so happen that they sell the very same chair for 110 QAR ,how strange is that?

DonisGood: Deep breath and count to 10. I think you're over-reacting.

Yes, it's inconvenient that you have to return it to the store you bought it from, but that's how it is and that's what customer service explained to you. You find many items stocked in one store but not in another, so the reason they gave is perfectly plausible. It's of course up to you whether you believe them or not.

And when you say that they are

"selling faulty products and refuse to take it back!!!"

that's clearly not the case, since they they'll take it back if you return it to the store you bought it in.

By DonIsGood• 14 Aug 2009 10:26
DonIsGood

Oh, I am sorry, does it need to be returned to the same place? Where does it say you need to do that??? It is NOT mentioned on the receipt, nor their return policy in store. Therefore, it does not constitute a rule or a law, hence the customer has the right to return the good at wherever they wish. After all, this is the customer service the customers deserve - and Carrefour Qatar is not providing the customer's basic needs - PATHETIC!

I know for fact that when I purchase goods in other parts of the world (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, America, etc), I could return goods at their nation-wide store - no questions asked.

This just prove to say that Carrefour Qatar is light years behind the rest of the world!!!

Don will u buy shirt from one armani outlet and try to return to another armani outlet??? Next u will b demanding tht carrefour in bur dubai shud provide replacement for goods bought in doha. customer service can only b extended to a certain extent. We supply some material 2 carrefour and it drives me mad that we have to go 2 three different places to deliver material to them but thats their policy, all stores are separate functional units.. relax.

And don't forget to bring the receipt when returning. It indicates there whether how many maximum days of return if defective. If you're out of the number of days of return, face the consequences.
