Mega Mart = Rip Off Mart

By emgee

To everyone out there. I'm sure this has been covered before, however, for any newcomers:
Just got back from a small food shopping spree at mega mart (usually use Carrefour) and checked the receipt.
A small pack of tomatoes priced at QR22 (expensive anyway) were actually billed at QR88!!
Outrageous! Check your receipts carefully or avoid the place.

That's why you go to MegaMart to get the imported items you like but can't get on the regular market here. You don't buy normal stuff like cola and veggies (although better quality usually at MM and butter and milk and and etc etc.

Common sense.

10 years later and most of you QL commentators have disappeared with Thanos snap.

Meanwhile, Megamart survives and expands with more branches opened in Qatar. xD

Yes true.. I think Megamart is overly expensive. I also hate the fact that they put this old style price on every item (sometimes they stick it on the cooking directions or on can opener). Also sine as I said their items are generally expense.. these tags keeps remineding you about that fact agin when you consume the items...lol

I don't think modern supermarket like Carefour place such tags on the items themselves.

when I wasn't looking...

No, the Food Centre has been closed for a few months now. We have been waiting to see who would take over the premises - it's a good location for a small food store - but Mega Mart???!!!

This is picture is obviously NOT me, I don't smoke..

I keep kicking myself everytime I go to mega.... only really go for the crisps :-), but end up getting the whole shop due to time constraints....

You have got to watch the pricing alright at the veggie section, and pretty much every other section....

I just don't get why the chocolate section is practically all airflown in from the UK and USA. Why can't they keep a section of chocolates from the local distributors...... robbery buying a cadbury choco bar flown in from the Uk. It is not like it tastes any better after a couple of heat exposures at the airport, then during its trip from the truck to the warehouse...it's lost the "fresh" taste...

fresh start, that's the first I've heard of it. Is there still a Food Centre there?

And btw, I did NOT give you permission to use my pic as your avatar :-P

Biggest rip off in Doha. Horrible shop and the Manager is a Bozo. Hate the place.

Lets hope it gets shut down soon, even if all it means is that fat, ugly, rude and greedy man gets sacked.

Mega mart are not a ripp off. There prices are very competitive, especially the bakery area, nice bread and cheaper than elsewhere. Most products are the same as the rest but if you want the chips that you get at home or the easter eggs that you cant live without, or the special chocolate that reminds you of home, then yes you will pay big bucks.

Carrefour has 25 riyals a kilo tomatoes as well and 5 riyal ones too. It all depends on what you can live without.

emgee, people go there for the experience, not for good prices.

By bleu• 1 May 2009 23:47
bleu

The "getting ripped off" experience.

The "This chewing gum is QR12!?!?!" experience...

The "This chocolate bar is QR18!?!?!" experience...

The "This bag of chips is QR37!?!?!" experience...

and many other similar experiences.

And we keep coming back for these experiences.

You need to make sure when you weigh fruit and veg that the guy who put the price on keyed in the right price.

The lady on the till only scan the price tag on the plastic bag of the weighed fruit and vegs.
