@ jjj75,EXACTLY,the folks @ megamart import their own stuff, they don't buy from local wholesalers like everyone else...HOWEVER,what they're doing is buying this stuff @DISCOUNTED WHOLESALE price from the UK or wherever else because it so CLOSE to EXPIRY & then have the audacity to sell it @ FULL price here & like you said, because one doesn't have a choice(story of this town really.) one is FORCED to shop there...it's a real shame if you ask me...daylight robbery...
I do most of my household shopping at Lulu (D-Ring or Gharaffa). I like their policy of admitting anyone regardless of colour, creed, nationality or status. They import much of their stuff themselves, quality of fruit and vegetables, etc , is generally good and many items are cheaper than in other supermarkets. Some people rave about their imported bread (I cannot think why because their own bread is good) but even that is cheaper in Lulu than in Megamart.
It's not like the situation is much different @ the Centre...it amazes me how people who shop there haven't noticed the fact that a LARGE part of their stock is almost always barely a few months away from expiry!!! is it just me??? seriously, take a look @ the expiry dates on their chocolates,"manufactured September 2010 expiry September 2011" is usually the case...or what about their crisps?...Kettle crisps that come as a multi-pack,i.e 5 small packs in one big one are opened & sold individually...of course,i didn't assume they would con people so brazenly but when i got home & was munching on the crisps,i noticed a little not in the bottom corner "part of a pack, not to be sold individually"...seriously & yet people(including myself) continue to shop there...why?...because this place doesn't offer us a choice...sure you have al-meera & Family food & Dasman & blahblah but guess what? They all stock the same stuff because it is all imported by the same people who the supermarkets then buy from...pathetic state of affairs if you ask me...
I was the only customer today in Megamart around 3,30pm. And yes - surrounded by staff everywhere and being followed around by security. I suppose they can afford all that staff and more IF their stock sells. A big IF though.
Well in answer to my own question and thanks TB, yes it is open. Alumnar makes valid points about prices and location, but in comparison to my nearest supermarket outlet which is Al Meera in Wakra, its a no brainer - i will be making the weekly pilgrimage to Barwa from now on - lucky me!! One observation I made other than the mass migration of staff from The Centre to Barwa is the inordinate number of security staff in the plaza complex - are they expecting some sort of riotous behaviour?? Is it a reflection on the Barwa populaous?? i swear there were more staff and security guys in the Plaza this evening than customers and thats NOT a winning business plan.
Yes it has! Yesterday. I went in today and what a bunch of crap I found! If you are fond of soft and overripe tomatoes, expensive vegetables, overpriced cereals, one of each item on the shelve, wrong price per kg on delicatessen items (such as cheese) unless you check the price once the item is handed to you - then you have come to the right place! How can omega eggs be sold with validity starting July 1st when the shop opened a month later? The prices are even higher (!!!) than Megamart in The Center - and this for Barwa Village? Do you, Megamart Management, know what kind of people shop there? Do you think you can get away with charging higher prices than Megamart in Doha?
Rethink your prices unless you want to see your stock staying past the sell-by date. Wrong place for that kind of rip-off prices!

You are welcome Khanan :)
For an Expat from the UK there are a lot of products only available in MM so feel forced to shop there mostly
for the review.
entering the veggie corner in FFC is like entering some battle field....:(
I love shopping in FFC. The vegetables and fruit are the best in Qatar. I love Lulu for their fresh fish and meat section.
