No, it was fine.  I'm just shocked how long it has been since the woman who called me "Bumby" has been in my life.  Ah, aging....

Regrettably,  there is only one person-a quite charming lady from my past- who gets to call me bumby.  Can you choose another one?

Agreed as to the length of my posting, but I tend (or so I have been told) to long-windedness when behind a keyboard, and this is a topic that got my ire up.

Strong words?  Possibly, but no stronger than the name calling it was a response to.  Pe

Very much agree as to the hazards of posting-without the tone of voice and body language errors of interpretation are all too easy-see above.

Gumby, I liked that last bit.

I am an Indian, by the way.   I would recognize that, you have been quoted out of context.  But many people do that, out of experience.  I have been ill treated by white people right here in Qatar.  "Ill-treatment" does not mean kicking in the ass.  Smiling politely also, somebody can hurt you, if you know what I mean.  It happened to me while I was searching for houses.  Smiling very nicely, at the same time giving more attention to the european guy standing just nearby, this lady was conveying to me that, "you fool, you cannot afford what this man can".  By the way, I could have afforded what she was showing me, but I decided I would not take it.

That does not mean, that, every white person in here are like that.  There are abberrations like I described above, of which kind, you may find everywhere in every society.

So Bottom line....take it on your stride.....

Regards,

quite strong words...

inspite of all the painstaking clarifications you seem to have put your foot into your mouth with your original cheap indian stuff  remark and later a long winded clarification that you were looking for expensive indian cloth and not cheap indian cloth....

this said, it isnt fair people misjudge you based on three words.

but your original posting would make any neutral reader misjudge you... thats the difficulty of internet forums...  very easy to misunderstand.

lets give you the benefit of doubt and assume you actually meant what you have been trying very hard to prove....

good luck with your cloth hunt. Hope you dont end up with cheap indian stuff - as you put it.

Wow, what a response-completely uncalled for as well.  I am looking for cloth, if I were looking for clothes I would have asked for clothes, but it seems  that some people didn't read closely and immediately took offence.

I stand by "cheap Indian stuff", as opposed to the expensive Indian stuff-I see no need to revise my sentence as it is accurate.

All of my formal wear was made by Indian tailors in Kuwait using either Indian or Chinese fabrics, but you have to be choosy, there are extremly good Indian wool-blends, and there are extremely bad Indian cloths, same with the Chinese cloths.  To reiterate, all that I have found in Doha so far is the "cheap Indian stuff"-the cloth with the  high polyester content, and not the good Indian stuff.  This is not a racist comment and it is an error to interpret it that way.  It is a statement of objective fact.

Ksarat16-"freakshow"?  I see no need for namecalling over a simple request.  Do you have enough information to insult someone over three words taken out of context?

Draj-Thank you for the information/veiled threat.  Be careful of what?  Offending  those posters who jump to conclusions with little information?  All I have to be careful of is disappointment over the lack of rigeur of some poster's thinking.

Thexonica-As I asked in my post, I'm not looking for clothes, I'm looking for cloth.  I'm very aware that much expensive clothing is made in sweatshops on the subcontinet and SE Asia, but that has nothing to  do with my original question.

To all posters who took offence at my phrase- there are low quality-cheap- goods and high quality goods from everywhere, that is in no way a judgement of the culture that produced them but a simple economic fact.  That this could be interpreted as racist (we won't even go into the assumptions that are being made as to my ethnic origin, which could lead to some interesting discussions on racism as well) is an error caused by failure to read closely, and reading too much beyond the lines.

The simple fact is, I want to make some clothing out of either high-quality Indian or Chinese cloth-simple-but want to be careful to avoid low-quality (cheap) Indian cloth as I have had bad experiences with it.  All I can find in Doha is the cheap stuff.  Not a controversial question, and certainly not deserving of the response it got.
