Another Thing...They send the birds to the vet because they bought them from the pet shop and now they are pulling their feathers and refusing to speak.
Parrots don't always speak, especially not those that have had a terrible, traumatic start in life.
Can I just finish by saying that I deal with several Qataris who have parrots and are the best owners. They treat their pets with love and attention and then, in return, the parrot speaks to them. Not all parrot owners are bad, just the people who want a talking fashion accessory.
Nobody NEEDS a parrot. Sure, go ahead buy a parrot, baby cheetah, koala, sugar glider from the pet shop. Do you really believe they have been captive bred? I don't want to be slanderous to the pet shops and some of them here, the aquatic ones are pretty good except one, but unless you can prove that these mammals and birds have not been trapped from the wild, DO NOT BUY! Remember if avian flu raises it's head again, the parrot will be unable to travel. It is extremely difficult to transport birds and very expensive. I feel very strongly about this, sorry I am sure you are a nice person but i see the fallout from the pet shop every day and it is horrific.
tyazbeck - yes, buying a parrot from a pet shop will be saving that one particular animal from "torture", but it will also encourage the pet shop to keep buying more animals. The best way to deal with the problem of bad pet shops is to not deal with them at all.
As for other suggestions, I'm afraid I don't have any as I have not yet found a pet shop in Qatar that I would consider anything other than disgusting.
One other consideration - what will you do with the parrot when you finally leave Qatar? Will you be able to take it with you?
herne - obviously it's hard not to feel sorry for the animals in the pet shops, but the worst thing you can do is take pity and buy them because that will only exacerbate the problem, since it gives the shop owners a profit and the incentive to go and get more stock.
A parrot is a lifetime investment. These creatures can live for many decades and could conceivably outlive you! So if you want to take on this really big commitment you may want to look for a very healthy bird, not one from a pet shop as tallg and MD recommend. Price should not be the major criteria in a long-term, committed care-taking relationship with a beloved pet.
Please don't buy from the pet shops in Doha. They are renowned for their poor treatment of animals and supply of illegal animals. Buying from them is supporting this.

Right tallg, but those poor animals being in the pet shops have a very bad life there, I really feel sorry for them.
The best would be to have pet shops with normal conditions for animals, why can' they do it here?
It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?
have you guys visited pet shops in al nasser? its really filthy and it stinks! aquariums are not well-taken care of, cat craps on the cage, etc.
cheers,
paul
I can only support tallg's post.
no bcoz we r unexperienced in this criteria
