Proper Clothes Please
Going to any mall or hypermarket these days, I can't help but notice many people going there as if these public places are extensions of their homes. They come dressed in their home clothes, shorts and slippers. Some have obviously just woken up and have not even bothered to comb their hair.
My friendly request to everyone reading this is to please get dressed properly when going to any public place. I'm not even mentioning here any dress code in this country. I'm only referring to the fact that for the sake of decency and respect to other people, wear something respectable when you are going to the mall or hypermarket. Please.
and this is Middle East! It's ok if everyday is your lucky day! Wait 'til you have an unlucky day!
OP, im not sure what the issue here is, in most countries, people are dressed according to the season or situation, bikini on the beach and dresses for church, obviously its summer and dont expect people to cover up as they do during winter, (well if you consider winter here a real winter), secondly, in places where i've been. people do not gawk, grope, give malicious comment nor harass people in flimsy clothing. we just do our own business. if were there to shop, we shop.
Lol!
Thats why it is called SHORTS. There is no such thing a LONG SHORTS?? ryt?? so why are u complaining???
We're on the same side here. My post aint for you.
"B.S. don't go to malls if you don't want to see people wearing sandals and rugged shirts & shorts" ------???? AND WHY I WILL NOT GO TO MALLS??? did i said i dont want to see people wearing those??? ( i just said not with short-shorts--) anyway what ever they want to wear.........who cares as long as u know how to respect other people.................
This reminds me of an old Betty & Veronica cartoon, where Veronica's father gets angry at them for wearing shorts DOWN TOWN because it's too casual.
As it should be Pilgram. Very important to set a good example for the plebs and all that.
From now on I will be sure not to go to Lulu Hypermarket in anything less than a ballgown with my hair perfectly coifed, so as not to offend the upper class.
The smell thing is nod to the later posts in the thread; scruffiness is to the OP.
the OP concentrated on the dress only, not the smell thing?
The OP is about scruffiness, not covering. And one culture's scruffiness is another culture's formal attire. For example, a man wearing sandals to Palais Garnier in Paris is totally in appropriate, but at the symphony recently in Doha I saw plenty of men wearing sandals, as it is part of Qatari national dress. An unwashed man not wearing deodorant would receive some serious frowns on an NYC elevator, but in other parts of the worlds such odors are simply part of life. To the OP: The point is that while there may be laws on covering, there are no such rules in Qatar on smelling and scruffiness, as my definition of scruffiness is may be your definition of dressing up.
I second the motion! It's just as disrespectful to be forced to smell other people's body odor in a closed elevator!!!!
reminded that this is Qatar and this is Middle East. The OP was not giving instruction but a suggestion. If you want to comply, fine, if you don't like, it's also fine. Why are some so mean in their comments. And if in an UNLUCKY day came in trouble because of improper attire, who to blame? The country laws and culture? Because others are doing it so everyone can follow? Is that it?That is why in our country, there is a PDOS, pre-departure orienation seminar, to which all those bound to middle east or any country are oriented about the culture of the country they will work on. This is to minimize (if not totaly eliminate) "any" bad consequence if you don't follow the local culture and tradition. Not all day is a lucky day! Testing the limitation is sometimes thrilling, but .......
nowreasonforsmile, as LIS said, as soon as other people start using deodorant, stop spitting, pushing and invading other people's privacy, I will consider wearing what ever you and those people advise. PROMISE ;)
What is the harm in giving respect to each other by dressing preoperly......in own country people wait long hours to see a royal bride in a proper wedding gown and when they go to others country they start bashing on abayas and jalabyas..why two faced.....?What is the harm is respecting a country's culture...is this is the education level of ours...?
they're avoiding dressing like sluts, hence no slutwalks in doha.
so when you are to choose between these two evils,
1. rape
2. fight with someone
what would you choose?
I love that bed-head look on me too...
well said tb :)
Until you clear immigration you are not officially in the country. Maybe they covered up in the baggage hall.
I have seen Rizks wearing his usual orange lungi with studded crystals and maroon big stars and beads on it.....I saw him once sitting in Gondola in river of Villagio and twice puying mallu checks bemudas in M&S.... :) He is really great....
Cant we follow or respect local culture...Cant we show them some respect by covering our bodies...
[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1403:]]great comments from great scholars.......................................................!belly dance quite right
So Lucy, it's OK to wear those clothes in Phuket, at Phuket airport and on the plane, but as soon as you stand beside someone at Doha airport who's been around you for the last 8 hours you must immediately change. Get real dear.
in malls when everybody follows the rules that you must wash your armpits at least once a month and apply the minimum of one squirt of deoderant, refrain from hocking up phlegm from the back of their throat while standing next to you in line!
If that can be achieved then i will wear whatever the clothes police on here want, until then, dream on!
B.S. don't go to malls if you don't want to see people wearing sandals and rugged shirts & shorts.
Some people think the moment they leave their country to Qatar they are in Mars Venus Jupitor or MOON or Amerika and in these kind of halucinations they start behaving same way too..In April first week I was coming back from India and I noticed one Europeon couple with their daughter at immigration counter near to us.From their talks it was clear that they were coming back from Phuket. Now the lady husband and daughter were in minimum clothes like shorts sleeveless tshirts and the teenage daughter was also wearing a skimpy top with shortest shorts. It should be a Government resposibility to let the expat community follow the rules and local culture. If even in India when US Embassy can guide their citizens to wear proper dresses while visiting rural areas than why cant here....In malls some ladies keep their infant kids barefoot on airconditioned cool floors and I have noticed with white community. They feel that by roaming in bare mnimum clothes or casual wera they are superior to those who are in proper clothes. It really feels bad if u took a long time to get dressed properly to visit some mall s and when u reach there u see people roaming in dirty clothes and sleepers....
Bed-head is very fashionable.
Now a days everything keeps changing,so go with the flow.It only annoys you more if u don't accept the reality.
Just go about your shopping and refrain from looking at what offends you! I hate only seeing a pair of eyes looking at me as all else is covered but I choose to look away...it's not hard! Live and let live!
democracy is a 2-way street
how about them complaining about you wearing too formal clothes in malls, that they cant act as natural as they want!
Let them wear what they want, at least they are true to themselves. Do you wear something because you like it or just because you want to impress others? Life here is too short to be tied up in the so called dress code which a society considers 'decent'. Get out of the box and feel free. There is nothing wrong with this kind of clothing unless one just lost his way from a sauna bath and wearing nothing.
And Protest,
Why you're so bothered 'bout that... Is it really a big issue for you...
Mind your own business c")
i think theres nothing wrong with shorts and slipper ( ofcourse not short shorts....)
as soon as you give respect to them, they will not harm you!
just ignore... and wear what for you is decent.
Everyone should be in a burqa. Even the men!
OLD FASHION COMMENT.....why you're so bothered anyway? What wrong with sandals, slippers, shorts, short sleeves and etc?????
i wanna c chicks in bikini's!
Are wearing Shorts and Tee not Descent enough for you? .. this is the 21st Century wake up...
in fact this is mentioned on the guidelines of each mall but nobody reads it.
