Salad Chopper

By Aunt Polly

Hi,
Just happened to read on msn health that one of the 14 kitchen gadgets required for any " healthy kitchen" is the Good Grips Salad Chopper with bowl.
Does any one know if this is available in Doha - if so where ?
WE do so love salad at home but are often deterred by not being able to chop the leaves into teeny weeny bits.

Canned food might include many preservatives, additives, flavors, colorings. Most are not natural products. Rather artificial. I am talking about the Eeeee's family.

I am not sure if there are any studies in this regard. But there are warnings about additives. Check the ingredients and do some research about the E-family. Here is a link to start with http://www.ukfoodguide.net/enumeric.htm

In my opinion. A nice presentation has nothing to do with the way you prepare food. For example salad is usually a cocktail of vegetables, possibly some fruits, possibly cheese and ham. You can simply mamage a nice decoration for the top part and forget about the lower part.

If you watch how Jamie Oliver prepares the food, you will be amazed. In no time he can prepare food and arrange a table with a nice variety and it looks yummy

there is a easy way to peel the garlic without having to get that card!

Just use one of your bigger knifes, lay it flat(edge is horizontal instead of vertical) on the garlic and press down (like it is flattening it) then just roll the garlic and all the peels will come right off, and it only take a few seconds!

I never saw anything like the garlic card. I have a small bullet for my food processor that I use for garlic as I cook with insane amounts of it. If the recipe calls for lemon juice I put half of it it in with the garlic and get a puree. I chop onions and herbs in the bullet as well. If the herbs are pretty dry (few spins in the salad spinner) they dont turn to mush.

How Kellysheroes ? Can you explain - never heard of this .

For women like me who are lazy but yet want to present a beautiful salad on my dining table, with the hope that my children will be motivated enough by its presentation to eat their daily requirement for green leaves each day, there is no go other than to resort to such gadgets. I wish I could use a knife and chopping board better, Baldrick and Kellysheroes. But I require much more of practice and patience of which I have very little,

All you need guys is a good knife and chopping board.

Regarding tabboule. Nothing will do but chopping the parsley by hand (knife/board). Even if you manage to chop the parsley , you are stuck with cutting the tomatoes. They have to be cut into 5 to 10mm cubes.

My information about healthy salad, is to chop the green leaves and herbs by hand (no knife)

The funny thing when they say "This gadget strips lemons and oranges of their outermost peels, which contain limonene, a compound that may decrease cancer risk." and somewhere else thay talk about a can opener. When cans are involved, cancer is there.

I think it does Eco- savvy.

I am so happy to see so many salad lovers and similarly frustrated people out in Qatar. I used to be so ashamed of my inability to chop parsley up, finely, for a tabouleh as they do in restaurants here and am glad to hear from others who are likewise handicapped.

I saw on TV once that in Lebanon, one of the criteria that the guy's family used to look for in their prospective daughters in law was whether she could chop up a tabouleh real fine.

Amoud,

Been there only once and ditto- I wanted everything out there- finally settled for a blender cum food processor, a spoon stand and some Henckel knives (which cost the earth but are worth it, I feel).

I was anyway thinking of looking there- the other place is TableArts - perhaps ???

Any idea about the Garlic card , Amoud ? Have you used it ?

AP you can try Tavoli in Royal Plaza. You may not find the brands but you can find substitutes. I love that place but make sure you take your credit card with you as I always want everything in the shop whenever I go :)

Jack,

Thanks for asking . On looking through the article again, there are only 12. I have " cut and pasted" them here for your benefit.

1. Sur La Table Soft-Handle Microplane Zester Grater

This gadget strips lemons and oranges of their outermost peels, which contain limonene, a compound that may decrease cancer risk.

2. Good Grips Ginger Peeler

3. Williams-Sonoma Two-in-One Citrus Juicer

4.Good Grips Strawberry Huller

5. Misto Olive Oil Sprayer

6.Taylor 9840 Digital Cooking Instant-Read Pocket Thermometer

Easier than a standard thermometer, the digital display makes reading the temperature of your food quick and easy.

7. Williams-Sonoma Avocado Pitter/Slicer

8. One Touch Can Opener

9. GarlicCard Grater

-Just rub garlic on the embossed lettering and you'll use up every last bit. After grating, rinse card with warm water and it's ready to reuse!

10. Good Grips Corn Stripper

11.Swissmar Spachello Slice & Spread

12. And of course, the salad chopper.

Am most interested in items 9 and 12 though.

I dont think you will find it, but there is a herb chopper here. It is basically a rounded 2 blade knife which is rocked back and forth over the leaves to make them this way. You should be able to find it in Lulu quite easily, or any supermarket for that matter.
