SPINNEYS is to be opened in "THE MALL", They already have set up a small office in the MALL. Its sponsored by Ali Bin Ali. I've been dealing with them for last 1 year.
a time in the late 70's when customs did confiscate pork. You could buy it back the next day at a shop which was replaced by a Pizza Hut on the airport roundabout.
people have brought in pork thousands of times without mishap. However, it really depends on the person screening the monitor. This does make a difference as experienced by Miss Saigon. Generally speaking the "unwritten and unofficial" system is - let is pass if its a small qantity, but one can never be too sure..
we had our short vacation last year in dubai, since its festive season, we try to bring pork ham for christmas dinner, they saw it at the airport, get my husband's id number for their record (xerox copy) they did not get the ham though and we will never ever bring pork again next time we travel,
You're joking??? I was told pork was illagal and you could land in serious trouble if you try bring it in. S#*T! I have to book a flight to Bahrain.... NOW! :-)
Well how about that. The inflight message on the airlines is only that importing alcohol is 'strictly prohibited'. I don't recall seeing or hearing anything that actually states that the importation of pork is illegal.
I've probably brought in the body parts of several entire pigs over the years and haven't so much as raised an eyebrow in the airport. But I guess that's because the security guards aren't watching the monitors.
Why do you think they sell pork products vacuum packed in the freezer section? It's so people can put it in their bag and take it to Qatar (and elsewhere).
The importation of pork isn't illegal, as far as I can tell, only the sale of it.
You can bring it in for personal consumption, but wholesalers and retailers can't sell it publicly.
If it is illegal, then I'm surprised, since we've all being bringing it in for years.
FYI:AL WA'AB CITY WELCOMES SUPERMARKET RETAILER, SPINNEYS, TO QATAR
Sheikha Hanadi Nasser Bin Khaled Al Thani, CEO of Al Wa’ab City and Michael Wright CEO of Spinneys signed the agreement.
Spanning 6,585 square metres of space, the Middle East's leading locally-owned supermarket retailer will be located adjacent to the entrance of the Barahat Al Wa’ab, Al Wa’ab City’s unique Piazza.
The Spinneys outlet will be a full service supermarket, but with great emphasis on fresh foods, prepared and served with the highest standards of hygiene, in a modern and comfortable shopping environment.
The international sourcing power of Spinneys will bring an unrivalled range of products from around the region and the world.
The business venture is set to raise the standards of the supermarket retail industry in the country and is a key milestone in Al Wa’ab City’s plans to offer diverse shopping choices for its future residents.
Sheikha Hanadi Nasser Bin Khaled Al Thani, CEO of Al Wa’ab City said: “Al Wa’ab City is privileged to welcome Spinneys to Doha, which reiterates our commitment to offer the finest retail and lifestyle choices for our residents. We are looking to promote unique experiences for our residents and the wider population in Qatar by providing unparalleled offerings.
"Al Wa’ab City is poised to be a lifestyle destination of choice that will energize the residential, retail and tourism concepts.”
Al Wa’ab City Management has retained world class facility managers SNC Lavalin ProFac to manage and operate the entire development, ensuring a quality experience for residents, tenants, shoppers and visitors to the Al Wa’ab City project. SNC Lavalin ProFac was instrumental in brokering the agreement between Al Wa’ab City and Spinneys
Wright said: “Spinneys is on a quest to bring its unique mix of quality and superior service to the markets across the region. Keys to success are the very best of locations and in Al Wa’ab City, Doha, Spinneys has found a perfect match.
"Spinneys has an 85 year tradition of service in the region and is recognized as the leading premier supermarket chain, and it is with great pleasure that Spinneys looks forward to serving the consumers of Qatar.”
The Doha store will open in 2010.
Al Wa’ab City is Qatar’s first family-planned community and a multi-use development conveniently located along one of Doha’s main arterial roads and in close proximity to some of Doha’s major academic institutions and sporting facilities.
Al Wa’ab City integrates a wide variety of housing styles and options, small- and large-scale retail, low-rise offices, health facilities, and a world-class 200-room luxury hotel surrounding the 44,000 square metre stunning urban piazza, 'Barahat Al Wa’ab'.
Al Wa’ab City will be home to more than 8,000 people in approximately 2,000 residential units. The development spreads over an area of approximately 1.25 million square metres with over 10,700 underground parking lots. This gives Al Wa’ab City one of the lowest population density ratios of any new major development in the country.
Al Wa’ab City is expected to be substantially completed in 2010.
Was that with an Inshaala super7? How many times have I heard that pork will soon be available over the past 24 years!
Even the bacon flavoured crisps were only available "under the counter".
The same happened with alcohol. It was first muted in the mid 80's but they didn't want people going into the Gulf Hotel (now the Marriott) for a beefburger and ten beers. It was tentatively agreed that they could spend on beer what they spent on food. It then died a death until 1995 when the Ramada opened Maxims and they served alcohol.
PS My Mrs tells me that Spinneys DID open in "The Centre" put pulled out over the pork issue before Megamart moved in.
Spinneys were going to move into "The Centre" in the early 90's but it fell through when they realised that they wouldn't be able to sell pork products.

@fubar, bringing in pork into Qatar is illegal. It's on the list of prohibited goods at the airport.
If they catch you they record your passport details and take away what you tried to bring in. Next time I think it's a fine. Not sure.

Hi i'm looking for an outlet by the name of SPINNEYS here in Doha. Can i get a contact name, number and location for SPINNEYS.
Was that with an Inshaala super7? How many times have I heard that pork will soon be available over the past 24 years!

Spinneys will be in the pearl and they will sell pork and possibly alcohol too according to my contacts there. God knows when pearl ready though
Spinneys were going to move into "The Centre" in the early 90's but it fell through when they realised that they wouldn't be able to sell pork products.
No spinneys. Qmart in the mall and the supermarkets in The Centre and Hyatt Plaza are similar but not as good as Spinneys.
I cant be absolutely certain, but i think theres a Mugg and Bean in city centre. Im sure someone else can confirm (or not)
You missing the UAE already :)... Dont worry, it does get steadily worse :P
