Villagio on Forbes List of Worlds Best

Sure, hot weather in places like the Middle East make indoor shopping centers preferable, but these spots go beyond necessity. Today's superstar malls are often the epitome of opulence. ...

For those traveling or living in the Middle East, Villagio in Doha, Qatar, is a must-see. Under a ceiling painted like the sky, this white marble mall resembles a movie set--or, better yet, a Disney (nyse: DIS - news - people ) theme park with its postmodern pillars, bridges and ornamental flares. But instead of prop closets or cartoon characters, the space houses over 200 shops, including Dolce and Gabanna, Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren (nyse: RL - news - people ).

The water and bridge inside the mall concept is a copy of a mall (Macau Venetian) in Macau.

We had some good meals there with friends, Sirai is one fave...coffeshops are spacious and not so noisy and crowded, it has been like a meeting point rather than City Center where everybody complains about parking. Just be careful to know where you park...last time, my husband and I took 1 hour looking for our car.

Got some stuff from Pull and Bear, Mango...cheaper than outside.

I like Villaggio. It has most of the shops I like. City Center is just a huge chunk of mall which IMO isn't really interesting.

Now, Landmark.. they have good shops. If we're talking about structure and design, LOL they fall way behind. Even if it's far, I'd still go there to do my shopping! ;)

lacking atmosphere. There wasn't a buzz that you get in other cities..

Does anyone else get the same feeling or am I just plain loco??

Genesis..... Well said!

It is all done on the cheap that is for sure. The lighting was not studied properly. The decorative theming is a major safety hazzard since its made out of something similar to styrofoam. The floor tiles are dirt cheap. The external elevations look old before their time. The bathrooms... well... not been in them...the sent on approach is enough to put me off....

Some of the shops are great but far too much repetition......but then one can only lease to brands being represented by regional franchises....

Seriously!

It's nothing compared to The venetian Macao not to mention the original in Las Vegas.

The finishing is cheap, cheap tiles, bad lighting & off course the worst are the toilets.

The shops are upscale but there is nothing outstanding about the shopping mall except for the luxury brands section

Yes the Villagio is a nice shopping mall. Much better than City Centre which is so unfriendly.

But the other day I walked from the Gap area to the Qtel office to pay my bill. As usual I took the most direct way (shortest) which was behind the skating rink, where they have all these bouncy castles. What a surprise to see how discusting this area was. Dirty dirty. I do not think they ever clean this area. And this is where the kids play. First of all there are so many bouncy castles propped in a very small area that it is hard to walk there. Then the walls are discusting, corners have all kind of dirt in them. If I had a kid of the age that would like to go on a bouncy castle, this would be one place I would refuse to take him/her to. And also imagine, if the floors and walls (where the passage is) are so discusting, what are the insides of the bouncy castles like? The germs! Kids are renowned for sticking everything in their mouths.....Bet you many of the kids that have been there will end up with worms or other parasites in their system. I just would like to warn you.

If you take your kid their, desinfect him/her during & immediately.

AA nadt, so nice to see you and how are things going?

Missing the hubby too much and can't wait to see him again! I have to travel to a few countries in order to sort some things out and then I will make my way over there. You know exactly how it is with designer labels and Arabs!

Thank God for you and Alexa's good common sense!

I love chloe platforms and high heels! They are my favorite!

Yeah one thing I was looking for is not having the name written all over the bags. And is why I stayed far away from LV handbags and the medusa in my search.

I'll look into those samsonites Alexa. Its not that I like only designers its just that it is all I have ever known! Very sad I know!

I agree with you Alexa, why pay all that money on a bag that will only be replaced in a few months, we chage our bags as regularily as we change our underwear. God can you imagine how many poor kids you can feed with the difference...Like Alexa said, "the trick is to look like a million bucks, but to pay only a hundred.....;)

Hiya PH, no doubt missing your hubby, poor thing..

Dont feel awkward because others have designer labels, just do what feels right for you..

No way! Did you look at the close ups! Honestly the pics don't do that bag justice it is amazing in person.

Okay now you definately owe me a shopping date to find out where all the hot spots are! I can't even get a taxi over here for 250 QR!

Oh Alexa I knew you would understand where I was coming from as you love fashion and style just as much as me. And you are clearly level headed as well!

link to python bag (although the one I liked was more exclusive) http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod44060055&parentId=cat12840732&masterId=cat13510751&index=4&cmCat=cat000000cat000001cat000009cat000019cat8590745cat13510751cat12840732

I just wish I could take you shopping with me and we could pick out a few things together now.

I did find some coach bags which were reasonable. And the replicas which are pricey seem to be better quality as you mentioned. http://www.exquisitebag.com/

We have a liz claiborne outlet close to me so maybe I'll pick up some luggage pieces from there. Besides luggage only gets ruined anyway. Much rather pay for liposculpture after I have the baby then that stuff anyway ;).

I just get out of my head sometimes because everyone around me (mom included) buy this stuff. And everytime I fly I feel rather awkward because everyone has something designer these days.

do you treat yourself?! ;-)

I happen to like Villagio, even though Malls & me don't really go. V is very similar in some aspects to Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai in terms of painted ceiling skies, the overall spaciousness (although IB is about twice the size)& similarlity of shops.

However, all the walkways are pretty much straight which gives IB a different feel, not as nice as V IMHO.

The Mercato Centre in Dubai is very nice, on several levels & has a real charm about it, whereas Mall of the Emirates I don't like.

I'm a guy, so don't shop a lot, don't update my wardrobe that often so shopping centres are somewhere to eat when I'm not having a beer somewhere!! lol, I wish right now.

IMHO , Yes you should.. If you can afford it , then a few luxuries are warranted..

By the way.. You can buy very good copies much cheaper, but i find that stitching always gives them away..

I find shopping exhausting.

I went to a mall to look for some travel luggage and a handbag here in the us.

The only ones I liked were from versace the runway kiss bag in pink and a travel bag for the hubby. A dolce and Gabbana bag with the richest red colour perfect for traveling! And the new python bag from Christian Dior.

All of them fab. The only thing that stops me is the price. Do I really need to spend 3k pounds on an awesome python bag that takes my breath away??

The Dolce and Gabbana bag was only 700 pounds! The versace kiss bag 1700 pounds and the travel bag 1k for hubby!

And that is why I hate shopping folks cuz everything I ever like is haram and expensive! Surely we shouldn't spend this kind of money even if we can afford it?? Right?
