hi guys,
I would like to purchase a new laptop.
so i was thinking lenovo would be better from the other options tha i have.
like toshiba
dell
hp
asus
acer
etc,
so guys tell me what all things i should look for when buying a laptop
like ram,processor,GHz,memory,design,color,price etc
dell has a few issues that are present in the 5110 series and also in the 7110 (the 17" laptops)
1. excessive heat from the bottom left side of the laptop. Sometimes it gets so hot that you cannot even keep your hand there :) - good cooling pad should do the trick... the problem is finding one here in qatar with a big fan and 2000-4000 RPM + high CFM (cubic feet per minute air intake)
2. Looks like poor quality materials were used when building the case of the laptop. Cheap plastic.
3. The performance is quite good however at the smallest sign of hardware stress (opening a program, watching a movie) it heats up like an oven.
I'll tell you more as they come up since i have the same model with different components.
I just bought a DELL laptop from Sofitel and besides the fact that they changed the Western Digital HDD with a Hitachi (which for now it's ok) and the slight heating problem (which can be solved easily with a cooling pad with 2000+ RPM fan) the laptop is amazing.
A bit overkill even for todays gaming requirements (i7 2nd Generation QuadCore, 8GB Ram, 750GB HDD, 1GB nVidia GT525M) but still... i got it for a very nice price and i don't have any reason to complain about it :))
Good luck with the Razerblade... but realy if u can get it we should meet for a coffee because i'm really curious.
Razer has excelent Customer Service, the only problem is distance. Since there are NO authorized Razer shops here in the Middle East that can sell Razerblade, you have to send it back to US in case of any problems. But something tells me that these guys don't want to have people send their products back into warranty so i doubt they will have any kind of issues with their products.
Good luck again!
Edit:
BAD NEWS! the laptop starts at 2700$ and they only ship it within the US.
ASUS is also a good brand, some models have a back lit keyboard which is good when your using your laptop at night. Also some ASUS laptops are heavy duty and reliable.
true... MSI is not known for they mobile options... actually these days they are not known for much at all... maybe some motherboards and graphic cards... but that's it...
I meant that people buy laptops JUST BECAUSE they are Apple or HP or Alienware or whatever...
For example:
1. HP: most of the old models and some of the new have huge quality problems when it comes to the components used to build the laptop. And here i am talking about the Motherboard since that one is the only one produced by HP with their standards. DV6 for example is probably one of the best laptops that this company is selling.
HOWEVER there is a HUGE downside... the weight. As i see HP laptops are extremely heavy (compared to other similar models from other brands) and have HUGE problems with the cooling system. I recently cleaned a DV6 from the dust (and here in the middle of the desert that is murder in the 1st degree for a laptop of ANY BRAND): before the cleaning the temperature went up to 85 degrees Celsius with the startup process only. After that it went back to 45-60 which is relatively good.
The HardDrives are Western Digital if i'm not mistaken... so it's a good advantage. It's silent and has a good performance.
Price Rating: the prices are ok... sometimes a bit higher than other brands.
2. Toshiba: These guys used to make batteries... they should have staid there. Bad components (low quality... like Samsung did with the Smart TV a few weeks ago). I haven't had much experience with them because only the name scares me away. All i know is that they break easily and they heat up a lot even as new. For HardDrives i think they use Seagate which has a good reputation but quite the low performance and they are noisy.
3. Apple: Good laptops... but the price is overrated! By a lot! All in all Apple makes quality products which is sold at 3 times the market average price for similar models.
4. Samsung: Acceptable... HOWEVER! since the problems with the Smart TV i would recommend NOT BUYING Samsung laptops for the time being.
5. Lenovo is quite new on the notebook market. But as far as i can see they are doing good... Their laptops have good components and the people that bought them are happy with their purchases. Prices are low and choices are many!
6. Fujitsu... i've heard a lot of people complaining about them... Technical difficulties, poor customer support, sometimes even component incompatibilities.
7. Sony: these guys are quite good... when they are not heating up like an oven. This is just for those that want "The pink one" for their wives/kids/girls in general. prices are higher than other brands while quality and performance remains identical.
8. ASUS: now there's a brand that promises a lot! Even though prices are a bit higher (200-400 QR above) they have amazing Software and Customer support.
9. DELL and Alienware: Dell is good although they tend to heat up a bit. A good cooling pad usually solves the issue. Good prices and very good performance. Alienware is JUST FOR ENTHUSIASTIC gamers. The ability to have the performances of a desktop PC on a notebook is something that gamers want. And what gamers want, gamers get. For the extra bucks of course.
10. ACER: Before they had some issues... but when they saw that people don't buy... they changed tactics.
Slightly cheaper then the rest of the brands and with some extra performance, Acer notebooks are good for all the users. Weather a business man or a gamer you can find something with these guys.
11. MSI: Unfortunately until now i have no idea about them. Never had a chance to use their laptops.
12. The last one and at this moment my favorite brand which probably most of you have no idea exists:
RAZER BLADE: talking about a notebook made for gamers, by gamers (oh yeah... these guys post on facebook every time they play something new). Custom Build EVERYTHING! But the main attraction is the keyboard. I cannot find the words to describe it so just go and check at http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.243119900/categoryId.57876700
and http://www.razerzone.com/switchblade-ui for the truly amazing keyboard.
Razer is known by most for it's gaming peripherals but they just took it to the next level.
Please post another message here with your needs ( what will you do with your laptop and i will come back and post a few options with pros and cons for each of them.
@Zilo_Guy10, I've never tried MSI laptops simply because of the fact that it's not even on the top 10 best laptop brands on reviews and polls on the internet. Even Lenovo laptops are better than MSI.
The Alienware is great for gaming and graphics and a beuty to look at,masculine ofcourse, the price is extreme,I actually got a profit when I sold it after one month use,it was an i7 2nd generation, but only had 250 GB HDD,4GB RAM and DVD drive
Toshiba 3D laptop had 640 GB HDD and 4 GB RAM ,Blu-Ray Rom DVD RE optical drive that could play 3D blu ray movies with active shutter glasses, but i5 processor,
Dell XPS M 1530 only dual core intel processor but with Blu-ray rewritable drive ,it can read and write almost anything,
I have settled for the Fujitsu AH572 laptop i5 second generation,500 GB HDD,4GB RAM,Blu-ray drive 3D Screen, with the brightest screen on any laptop, passive 3D ,a/b/g/n wifi, intel wieless display, usb 3 -2ports and more than 5 hours battery life ,and it is made in Japan not china,i think this is the best laptop if you could buy one
1. don't buy too famous brands. they are not offering anything extra
2. look for the best configuration that suits your needs.
3. Personally i recommend Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus.
4. Depending on your budget you should look for the best options.
At the moment the best configurations that don't cost that much are core i5 Second Generation, 4 GB ram, 500+ GB Hard-Drive, 15.6 inch screen. The graphic card is a plus but not mandatory since i5 second generation has a pretty good integrated graphics (basically the better the CPU the better the graphics performance).
So at this time i would recommend:
Dell inspiron 15r: i5 SG, 500GB, 4 GB RAM, GT525M - 1GB graphic memory - this was bought by a friend of mine from sofitel with 2300QR.
Something cheaper than that:
Acer has some laptops that are very cheap but give very good performance. They are using some old CPU's brought back to life by the Second Generation from Intel (like Celeron).
This i have right now:
Acer Aspire 5349: Celeron b800 (dual-core), 2Gb ram, 320 GB HDD, 15.6" - bought also from sofitel with 1350 QR.
The performance is good since i'm playing games on it.
Now to answer:
What to look for:
Brand: NO! NOT EVER! brand is just a name and a logo. usualy that means increased prices just for the fact that u are a privileged user (like Apple MacCrap)
Design: Nope... u are buying to use not to look at it.
Price: Of course... Money counts after all
CPU: nowadays a dual core is the people's choice. so i5 Second Generation is a good option
RAM: preferably more than 2GB. Personally i recomend 4
HDD: Don't look only at the size, this time the brand also counts a lot! Look for Western Digital! At the moment they are the world leader in this business.
Screen Size: 15.6" is enough. You also have to think about resolution. Smaller than that and you have 2 icons that occupy all your Desktop Space. Bigger than that and you will buy a monster hard to carry around.
Color: Please... that is a personal pleasure... i like mine black... But please don't look for the pink Sony Vaio's (lady's you know what i mean!). It's just some paint... i can do that pink on any brand with a can of spray-paint.

@mandilulur thanks man....
I was not happy with my Lenovo for $2,000, ever! My little Asus for $250 was OK for the price. I love my Macbook Air (about $2,000!
Mandi
so guys whats your opinion about dell n5110.
with i5 and 4gb ram
I replyed to your PM.

ok so here is what i need.
im mostly into programming and using internet alot.
so i need your suggestions on it....

@ simple: What about MSI Laptops ? Are they good too with service and overall ?
@goodguy123 apple mac is not windows.the whole internet is using products of microsoft.
i love apple n got an ipod touch too.
but its too costly tooo.
i may go for that fujitsu
Cant go wrong with a apple mac book pro, there very durable and have a good warranty from apple.Buy one from carrfore and get the extended warranty.
Main three things to consider:
1. Price
2. Processor (i3/i5/i7)
I recommend:
-i3 for basic users
-i5 for graphic artists and professionals who use loads of engineering softwares like autocad, etc.
-i7 for hardcore gamers and users who have loads of software
3. Hard drive space
I have Acer, Dell, HP & Toshiba laptops. I recommend Acer.
The Alienware is great for gaming and graphics and a beuty to look at,masculine ofcourse, the price is extreme,I actually got a profit when I sold it after one month use,it was an i7 2nd generation, but only had 250 GB HDD,4GB RAM and DVD drive

Think about an apple, if your budget permits.
Think about an apple, if your budget permits.
Think about an apple, if your budget permits.
Think about an apple.
try considering samsung..
in my personal opinion, most laptops are asembled in China now a days..
well in that case of rough use too..i think lenovo will do fine.
coz i hav been using hp for the last 4 years n now it wont work.
dell gives good customer service.
Brand doesn't matter? I don't think so.
Beat these...
1. My HP LAPTOP is TURNED ON 24/7 since May 2008.
2. I use it daily to watch movies (Bluray & 1080p movies).
3. Downloading most of the time.
4. It's turned on even if I'm not home.
5. Turned off only when I need to restart it after an update.
6. Always relied on it to retrieve important files.
Basically it's processor is BUSY 24/7
Thanks HP.
Is MSI laptops good in working ?
@runner thanks man....ya the main thing is brand...n what about their customer service.
so you didnt say anything about lenovo.
i will be using laptop a lil bit rough.
so kindly say from this 3 which will be best.
1. don't buy too famous brands. they are not offering anything extra

Performance almost the same....lol
Yeah type of processor, size of memory, screen size and resolution, weight. All irrelevant. Sure...
thnk only about money. performance almost same.
