This reply may be a little late, but last weekend I happened to discover this Malaysian restaurant at Hotel Holiday Villa (C Ring Road, near Mansoorah).

I loved the food! I got takeout, so don't know about environment and alcohol, but the food alone is worth going there for!

also in matar qadeem street, there's one Malaysian restaurant called 'taste of Asia'.. Anyway Malaysian cuisine and West Indonesian/Indian/Srilankan cuisine are almost same. We eat chili, we eat spicy, we eat food with coconut milk and YES we eat curry and biriyani as well even in different way.. So don't be afraid to bring them to any of those Restaurant, he will like it.. But can you advice me about your friend, is he pure Malaysian Malay or Indian/Chinese Malaysian? If Chinese then just bring him to Philippino Restaurant or Japanese restaurant, khalasss..

There's a Malaysian Restaurant in Souq Waqif. It's at the far end of the alley where Al Bandar is. No Liquor.
