Hi All,

Does anyone know where to get nice and tasty steak meat in Doha ( not dining out, but to be made at home)?

Meat such as the link below:

that I've liked. I emphasised the 'bought' cos maybe I have eaten tender meat in restaurants, but then again I usually go for the fish dish, so maybe I haven't.

What I mean is: It doesn't matter from which country the meat comes from - it's all HALAL. Which, in turn means it has no flavour and is tough.

Honestly! This is the only conclusion I can come to as to why I don't like the meat sold here.

Melt in the mouth beef or lamb steak just doesn't happen.

The other place that has good meat, besides Mega Mart is the Food Centre which is near Messilah compound/petrol station.

I'm inclined to agree on all 3 points, particularly #1. Eating in a mall really sucks.

When I first arrived here, I often went to the The Butcher's Shop & Grill. The steaks are good and the service adequate but there are 3 problems that don't exist at the other good steak houses in the city (e,g Le Grill and Bentley's):

1. It's in a mall and close to a skating rink - so it's noisy and sometimes cold.

2. You can't buy a drink of scotch or a glass of wine as you can at the other places I mentioned.

3. It's too expensive - even with the Entertainer Book coupon.

tallg, yes, the appetizers they serve are supposed to be boerewors.

Logically you are right, if they treated the meat the same way then it should be pretty good, but the reality is different. Perhaps the owners here treat the meat differently?

Anyway, if you go to SA then do yourself a favor and go to the restaurant there. You'll be amazed with the meat.

Scarlett, I don't normally eat the baked potato... Would rather order a bigger steak, lol.

Fatcat is right..the meat is VERY different than the same restaurant in SA. There, you can cut it with your fork, its so tender and the taste is incredible! Have to say tho that the times I ate at Butchers, they had no idea how to bake a decent baked potato!! I could have tiled my floors with the skin!!

I can't eat the beef from here as its got a really funny taste to me. The Australian and New Zealand beef is much more to my liking, plus I know they don't use growth hormones.

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do,and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Yes, agreed they're killed differently which will obviously affect the taste, but they're treated the same afterwards.

Are the Boerewors what The Butcher's Shop & Grill serve as an appetiser before your meal arrives, with the monkey gland sauce?

Tallg, the meat cannot possibly be the same. The Butcher Grill in Joburg is not halal, so the meat has got to be different.

Boerewors are South African style spiced sausages.

sure people have different ideas about it.

but really, everytime i go to that place my steak is chewy, either overcooked or undercooked...never the way i ask it to be.

and i have been there with different people and they have the same issues as me.

If you're looking for a problem, you're probably gonna find one.

I'd love to try the one in Johannesburg. We're thinking of a trip to SA for the Lions rugby tour next summer, so maybe I'll make it then.

Why do you think the steaks aren't as good here? The meat comes from SA and is hung and treated in the same way.

And what is boerewors?

tallg, you are right, different people have different ideas to what a steak should be. My issue with the Butcher Shop and Grill at Villaggio is that their steaks are really different to the ones we get back in South Africa, at their shop. And the boerewors... The one they serve here can't even be called a boerewors!

If you ever have the opportunity, try the one in Johannesburg. Now that's a steak! :)

Where is Bentley's grill?

To me if I ask for it rare and it actually comes back rare rather then medium well or blue, and I can actually swallow the meat rather then spend all night chewing on it. It's a good steak.

I didn't enjoy the Butcher's Grill at all, Bentely's grill at the Ramada and Le Central at La Cigale have the best steak I've eaten here.

Fatcat - I've been several times and it's by far the best steak I've had in a Doha restaurant.

I just wish the Butcher Shop and Grill here was the same as in South Africa... I went there and, honestly, it was a pathetic excuse for a South African stake!

Go to The Butchers Grill restaurant in Villagio (by the ice rink). They will sell you cuts of their beef (South African).

Carrefour has a good top side steak, very lean and tasty. Also Australian.
