Why it is taking so long to have Consumer Price Index to get implemented in Qatar to control the prices of essential consumer goods?

In Australia, a land full of grass and cows, 2L of milk is now $4.50$4.50 x 3.6 = 16.20 QRStop Complaining :)

Surely if its subsidised, then the Saudi government would make up the difference ..

By frenchieman• 26 Jul 2011 12:42
frenchieman

Interesting that milk in KSA is subsidized.  That would explain why the KSA companies are trying the take advantage of the consumer in Qatar.

Sorry for such idiotic questions.. but is milk in Qatar sold cold?  it is not high heat/shelf stable?   And how much is it- like what is the range?

By anonymous• 26 Jul 2011 06:36

Few years there was some kind of control from Government that every where milk will be sold on same price...now no control and no care for the general public...Al Ghadeer milk is better than others in taste and Al Marai is worst.Al Marai is trying to take advantage of their well established image only.... :( Although their butters are much better...

By nomerci• 26 Jul 2011 01:25

well, even if one looked at the price of milk, one still would have to pay the same amount as if one didn't...non?

By lucky_go• 26 Jul 2011 01:12

That is the problem here in Qatar. No one bothered about spending here, having lavish money in the vallets and bank accounts or credit cards. Just going to the super/hyper markets, put what ever wants in to the trollys and in the cash counter any amount the cashier said pay them in cash/cards. Who is looking the price for milk, no time..really busy..hahaha

By qatarisun• 26 Jul 2011 00:59

gosh, i wish I knew the price of milk.. never paid attention... no clue how much it's back home either..

Please note that milk in Saudi Arabia is subsidised. In Qatar it is not... and that explains the price gap between the two markets. Plus, do not forget the cost of transporting it in specially cooled vehicles , which could be very high.

By edifis• 25 Jul 2011 21:25

The people in Qatar ate up all the cows, so there no more cows to give any milk. So they have to import milk. That is why milk is so costly.

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2011 21:25

why do people stay in Qatar if they don't like the country, the way of living or standard of living can't they just fly back to their own country

& after all that the milk available here tastes rubbish,be it Al Marai or Ghadeer or whatever else, absolutely tasteless...so you pay more than the others...for a crap product...as for megamart prices, the less said the better, however we must bear in mind that there must be a whole bunch of idiots in this town willing to pay 100 bloody riyal for half a gallon of milk for the crooks @ megamart to charge that & it will probably expire in a week like a large proportion of the "imported" stuff they sell there, which clearly means they buy this stuff abroad even cheaper than it's actual price since it's so close to expiry & then sell it at double the price here, daylight bloody robbery...

my friend's has different opinion, and he always compares the european brand milk in qatar with those windows cleaners imported from europe for project manager jobs, both are in high demand with higher prices.  though i'm not agree with him.

Topic owner please specify the base/source of Milk. Is it cow/buffalo? If yes, it is worthless for us to run behind the price hike-up in this product whereas comparing market price in these 3 years, market prices are been increased up by 3 times.  Sure Qatari authorities will look into this issue as 1.7 million foreigners are working in Qatar and many of them are earning in worst level. Cannot simply survive.

For how long less rates? After Ramadan everything will go back to its original prices...like ghee if they could have they could have hide  milk too from selling it on lesser prices...I hope after few days we will hear that now a days no milk in hypermarkets too.....

Considering that the transport costs are incredibly low (low wages for workers, badly maintained trucks, cheap petrol) and presumably no taxes, so someone is making an absolute killing.

the same milk that sells for QR 7 in saudi is sold for QR 12 here. Obviously someone is making a tidy sum :O(

Chinese milk is illegal in Qatar thanks to the wisdom of the Qatari government.  Not to turn this into a religious thread, but does milk have to be halal or is any old milk ok?

And, yes, FM. Chadeer is Qatari milk, but some people say, it doesn't taste good. That's what I call 'bashing'!

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2011 19:02
anonymous

No, FM, it goes directly against the authorities! Imagine you have ten children. How can you feed them properly? And this is the 'richest' country in the world. What if all other countries refuse to send milk? Are they drinking oil or what? This is an issue of immense importance. And who wants to drink Chinese milk with all the plastic inside?

lipsy--is any cow's milk produced in Qatar for sale?   I thought most of it came from Saudi.

By frenchieman• 25 Jul 2011 19:00

This is not a bashing thread LP.  Please stop with the hate and negativity about Qatar.  Curb your jealousy, and just be grateful you are able to afford the milk in this cowless, grassless nation.  As for the "greedy shop owners" I can only hope that wasn't directed at a particular race or ethnicity.

I say because caws are imported feed for cows not produced by qatar care takers from from subcontinat lots of efforts to drink a good glass of milk.

Some people say because it is imported. Some people say the cows in Qatar are too few and don't give much milk. Others say because the shops are greedy. And others say, there is no grass in Qatar. However, this thread is really relevant!
