There are some fundamental issues to consider regarding location for a business. These will greatly affect the success of any business. These are just a few....
'Access' - is the site easily accessable to potential customers. Is it in a well known area and near main roads and easy to find. Does public transport service the area? 'Visibility' can potential customers easily identify the building/signage etc or will they find it difficult to find. 'Parking'- can customers easily park within a close proximity or will they leave unable to find a carpark. 'Safety/Comfort'- is the location in a safe area which is appealing to the potential customer. 'Protected from future development'- is the area subject to redevelopement by government or local authority which may adversely affect the business? Can a developer build near the location and block the customers view of the building/signage? Will future construction cause disruption to access to carparks etc. 'Foot Traffic' - how many potential customers walk past the location already? High foot traffic means less to spend on adverting and marketing. 'Competition' - how many competing businesses are within the area? Many competitors will dilute the amount of potential business. Low competion in the area will be an advatange. These are the type of key issues when accessing a location. Hope that gets you started.

Q. how location and layout decisions affect the performance of a business?
Ans: The location, size and layout of business is very important. Managers need to think, how finished goods are transported away from the plant. The layout should make it easy to co-ordinate the various activities that will take place there. Time and cost involved in transferring goods, information, people should be kept in minimum.
The location of an organisation and it plant will undoubtedly have a major effect on his performance. The problem of location are long term and clearly, decisions taken today have implications for tomorrow. In many small business, the problm is not so much one of location, but of finding a site.
Whatever the type of business, the aim will be to locate in an area where the diff b/w benefits and costs is maximised. Important consideraztion will be to minimise the cost and maximising of outputs from given quantities of resources.
Some of the important factors influencing the location are..
*Transport Cost: blaa blaa... u kno.. ;)
*Labour: bla bla....
*Housing: Bla bla...
*Amenities: Electricity, water.. bla blaa..
*Land: blaa blaa..
Enoff enoff !! My hand are paining... :(

Ahh.. Transportation problem. Location and layout decisions should allow you to: (1) minimize the operating costs , and (2) maximize the profit of doing business over different locations.
Work measurement involves the estimation of the amount of human effort needed for producing a unit of specified output from an operation. The amount of time that is usually taken by a well trained worker, operating under normal working conditions, to produce one unit of output is referred to as work standard.
Operations managers use work standards when assigning work to employees, scheduling work in departments, and evaluating employee performance. Managers use several different techniques to set work standards. In this chapter, we discussed time study, standard data, predetermined motion times, work sampling, historical analysis and employee self timing.
Time study involves recording the time required to complete a job by a worker, incorporating the necessary allowances, and then estimating the total time required to perform the job. Standard data makes use of a database which provides standards that have been set for common tasks or movements.
Managers need not set fresh standards for these common tasks; they can simply refer to the database to obtain them. The predetermined motion time study is a technique for setting work standards that uses the recorded standard time data for each of the basic motions (reach, grasp, move, turn, stretch, etc.) associated with performing a task to determine the time required to perform the whole task.
Adjustments are made to this data since operating conditions vary from firm to firm and job to job. Work sampling is a method of analyzing the work by taking a number of observations at random. Historical analysis is a non-scientific technique that makes use of past data to set standards.
Employee self timing is another technique for setting standards. In this method, employees maintain a log of the time spent on each specific task. This technique is generally used to set standards for white-collar workers. Managers use work standards to evaluate the performance of employees and take decisions regarding rewards and compensation.
