AN INVITATION TO A SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT
Good morning to you all,
Let me first wish everyone A Blessed New Year and hope 2009 brings fulfilment of your dreams and desires whatever your station in life is.
My dream is the revival of the Qatar Scrabble League (QSL) which I founded in 1996 but which unfortunately met its demise 3-4 years ago due to organisational and leadership breakdown. (I left Doha in 1998).
But now, you'll be pleased to know that things are moving very fast to regain for QSL its rightful place in the community of competitive clubs in the Gulf Region.
A double event is happening this month:
A. IAID Winter 2008 Scrabble Tournament, Friday, 9th January 2009, 3-6 p.m. at the IAID. This is the finale of the 3-week Scrabble sessions for young beginners (6-18 years old) that I conducted in December at the International Academy for Intercultural Development (IAID). There will be 23 new learners who will battle it out in the Kids Division.
Back to back with the Kids will be an Adult Open Division for the first 20 registrants. Registration for adult participants are ongoing at the IAID until 7th January 2009 for a tournament fee of QR25.00. IAID contact details: 4320974; 6710589; [email protected]; directional map to IAID available on request
B. RE-LAUNCH OF THE QATAR SCRABBLE LEAGUE
The conduct of the Tournament will also be the vehicle for the re-launch of the Qatar Scrabble League.
In a meeting with the Directors of the International Academy for Intercultural Development (IAID), a partnership was struck between IAID and QSL.
IAID recognised the great potential of Scrabble to positively impact the Qatar community and so it generously offered to provide QSL the venue for its weekly play-meeting.
QSL will operate as a friendly and fun club with competitive standards and will uphold IAID's role within the Qatar community as a leader in providing learning experiences to a multi-and inter-cultural population. IAID's progressive success over its 7-year existence which have gained them the respect, patronage and confidence of their ever-growing clientele offers Qatar Scrabble League superb exposure and access to a base of potential members, out of which ... potential champions.
The QSL will regularly meet on Friday afternoons 3:00-6:00 at the IAID.
So, if you've been part of the QSL before, I encourage you to bring out your Scrabble boards and word lists/dictionaries and start shaking those tile bags and roll into games. If you are new and interested to discover the beauty of Scrabble, please do come and join us.
But, If you feel this is not for you, could I kindly request that you forward this email to any of your friends or colleagues or even family members who might be interested to join QSL.
I would greatly appreciate if you could confirm or decline participation by way of return email to me. And should you have any suggestion, thoughts or comments, I would love to receive them.
Further, after the January 9th event, we are holding a re-organisational meeting to firm up the QSL structure and put in place the club's leadership, replacing the current interim committee. I would like to invite you to be part of the re-launch group to take QSL off the ground. In that meeting, we will share with you our vision and what we hope to accomplish as a competitive club in 2009 and beyond.
Thank you so very much for your time and I do hope that you'd join us in giving Qatar a renewed representation within the Gulf Scrabble community and the wider world of this all-time favourite board game, SCRABBLE.
Very warm regards.
Qatar Scrabble League
