Jobs in Qatar: Are we really safe?

Tonight I have been watching the news coming in from CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera. They were reporting the series of job cuts and layoffs announced by big companies in America and Europe.

On nearby countries, I've heard sad stories of layoffs in Dubai that even one supposedly blue chip developer just laid off people without giving their end of service package and return ticket. Employees just bought tickets on their own just to get back home than spending months fighting for the serverance package they deserved.

For 3 days now I have an open web page from a Philippine network entitled: "Qatar likely destination for laid off Pinoys in UAE" http://www.gmanews.tv/story/145717/Qatar-likely-destination-for-laid-off... I have been reading and re-reading it for 3 days now. It seems it was the other way around a year ago.

My landlord told me this weekend that Qatar seems to be a fort during a storm that he stopped looking for job opportunities from other countries. He has friends from the UAE asking for job openings here in Qatar. He decided to stay put until the storm of this economic crisis dies down.

All these stories made me think: Are we really safe with our jobs here in Qatar?
