NAIA To Wait 2-3 Months Before Providing Toilet Paper and Soap
Stung by criticism that Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) as one of the world’s worst airports, officials promised to clean its Terminal 1 toilets by providing running water, toilet paper and soap—all within two to three months.
Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority, told the Inquirer in an interview last week that the agency had imposed upon itself the task of renovating all toilets in the three NAIA terminals by June or July.
The self-imposed deadline came after critics voting on the website “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” rated NAIA the fifth worst in the world—behind two in France, including Paris Charles de Gaulle, Los Angeles and Moscow.
The NAIA has the distinction of topping the list of the worst airports in Asia—numero uno.
“What we can promise to our traveling public is that within two to three months all our toilets will be fully equipped with toilet paper and soap,” Honrado said.
And, he vowed, broken plumbing will be fixed, and there’ll be running water.
He said his agency had been renovating lavatories in Terminal 1, and had finished work on seven to eight sets of male and female restrooms out of 17.
On the other hand, the lavatories in Terminal 2 and 3, weren’t broke, and, being in tip-top shape, needed no fixing, Honrado said.
Some of the complaints raised by travel critics about the NAIA terminal involved its “filthy toilets,” as well as not enough seats, and officials asking for bribes.
Honrado said he respected the opinion of the reviewers but invited them to visit the terminal again and see the improvements.
He also noted that the website was geared toward budget travelers who slept in airports to save on lodging.
Honrado said Terminal 1 could not accommodate airport sleepers, given the space limitations.
However, he promised clean toilets for the weary travelers, at least in the coming months ahead.
The question nags, though. Where is the airport travel tax being paid by travelers going?
