Hello friends. I need your urgent help and assistance. Few days back I met with an accident and hit a person who was running across the road..where there was no Zebra cossing, no signals and i was driving under the speed limit. Unfortunately the person died after hours in hospital . I have a third party insurance of my vehicle. I spent one night in jail and was given bail next day after paying 5 K riyals. I got my car and the police report after paying 100 riyals. I have been told to wait for the court hearings now. I want to know how long will the case last and when can i go out of the country if needed.I am scared and lost the confidence in driving .Though the person was at fault but i am feelig guilty. I need you valuable advice & suggestion. SHould i drive again in Qatar?

what makes you think that the insurance company will pay the blood money? no... you are not allowed to leave Qatar until the case is resolved and the court has given the verdict... it will take time as in a very long time... so be patient and enjoy your life...

Wait for your charge sheet, and then consult with lawyer. Your lawyer will the tell you to get authorization letter from the MOJ, your lawyer will tell you the court hearing schedule. Your case duration may depend in your lawyer. Get a good lawyer because He is your good defence.

If your license is not suspended, I think you can still drive.

You are in a bad situation. It is only natural for a person to be completely upset when he is faced with such a situation. Have strength and do not allow the incident to destroy your confidence. Once you begin

driving, your fear will gradually disappear. In the current situation, I do not think you will be able to leave Qatar. Check with your company's PRO. Your insurance company should cover the blood money requirement. Talk to a legal expert on this.

Rakesh, I sympathise with you and the family of the unfortunate guy.

For a person to die, you must have been doing a pretty good click.

Anyways, since the police released you, do be more careful in driving. Do not give up driving and be more aware of your surroundings, any vehicle is a tool of death, we have been given a licence to drive and our responsible for people in the car and around.

Hope your insurance will cover the blood money.

I empathise with you and understand how traumatic a road accident can be especially if it is fatal one . Where did this accident take place,so other drivers can drive with caution to avoid another tragedy?

My advice as mentioned already is to take a break for a while from driving but I wouldn't suggest giving up as it will become a hindrance to you, especially if you need it for work purposes. Also, I advise that you seek legal advice and appoint a lawyer to help you in this case.

Secondly, I would recommend that you go to your doctor and ask him to refer you for counselling so that you can deal with these feelings of guilt. If these feelings are not dealt with ,it can lead to depression and anxiety issues,so please do get support.

It would also be advisable if you could try to find out the deceased persons family's contact details / address and apologise to them, if they are poor ,you could give them some financial assistance?

The most important thing you could do is approach the department which deals with road safety and maybe do a petition ,get as many signatures as possible and hand it to them. Get them to take action and don't give up until they do something to improve road safety.

I did a forum related to this a few weeks back when I arrived to Doha about safety on Doha's roads, as this is one of the first things you experience as a passenger and a pedestrian that you literally have to " run for your life" when crossing roads here!

I hope this info helps. All the best.

That's the problem I notice at Corniche- During weekends I notice people will cross/run the roads unexpectedly. They do this at night too. People here drive very fast especially the big SUVs & taxis.

I think the govt. should consider making a walking overhead bridge & install a barrier along the pavement to discourage crossing the road.

I know the feeling of being guilty because we do not intend to harm or accidently hit someone. Maybe take a week or 2 off from driving until you settle down & clear your mind off( I know its hard due to the upcoming case) Just set it aside & think positively & drive more careful once you gain confidence in driving.

One of my relative had experienced same .. may be 10 years back in India.

He never stopped & carries on driving till now .. aged 60+.

Don't tell to other people unnecessarily .. they will confuse you ..

Hope you may come out clean from this case. Be more careful, one task at a time.

Xcep. is correct in his advice.

Don't worry .. keep on driving if your license is not ceased but with more careful attitude. Be nice to the padestrians.

Try to help others, spend more time in social services as a compensation, and for the peace of your mind.

Time heals all the wounds.
