Advice wanted: For would-be Qatar employee

I might still be studying at the Lebanese International University "L.I.U", my first year, for now as a Freshman student, but I wish to move to Doha and work there, also trying to earn the Qatari citizenship for the first time. According to the ministry of foreign affairs, it might take me (non-Qatari Arab) 15 years to earn it, unlike non-Arabs who would need 20 years to do so.

But, if you guys are living in Qatar already, either in Doha or any other city, what advice would you give me? I would like to know the tips or steps into moving in confidentially.

Just in case, I am taking the Graphic Design course.

Thank you.

P.S. Are there job opportunities in Qatar, in Doha or elsewhere, for graphic designers, what is the average salary per month for graphic designers, and is it possible to start one's work place within a period of time?

Super7/Angelo, I know when their playing/running/jumping days are over that they lose the nationality. Personally, I think it's a sad state of affairs and the practice should be stopped. I am also aware that Britain was one of if not the first to practice this with Zola Budd.

la Jolla, does that mean that there is a chink in the armour?

Super7,

a colleague of mine with information from the MOI said the same thing, people are given citizen ship for a short period, get paid and then citizenship taken away.

These medal winners are not really Qatari because their citizenship is frequently withdrawn once their running/Chess playing/jumping days are over.

In many sports (such as rugby) you can only obtain a new nationality by residing in the country for several years and never have played for another country. However,in athletics you just need to be granted a passport. So passports are given and then taken away.

There is a Chinese-Qatari. No joking. But she won lots of gold medals in her field ( International chess ). You will see how many chess medals Qatar will put in this Asian Game, hehe, and the winner will be a chinese, oh, sorry, Qatari.

Okay, but what about working in Qatar without the citizenship then? After all, one must find work one day, in case there isn't any work opportunity back home. :s

Dweller, there is no application mechanism for nationality in the gulf states (apart from recent rules in saudi). Any citizenships handed out are done on a case by case basis at the behest of the big man. The majority of naturalised qataris are from yemen and these obtained it pre gulf war. Other nationalities would have obtained it by virtue of their closeness to people of power or because of extreme wealth.

so, qasamaan. The likelihood that you will qualify for nationality by virtue of being here for 15 years (under current laws) is virtually impossible. Even marrying a qatari lady (which needs special permission) does not make you eligible.

dweller, I didn't mean to ridicule anyone wanting it. It would be great - especially if you are Palestinian (or Libyan or any other Arab nationality that causes you pain at airports).

My comment was about someone wanting to invest like 15 years on something that is far from certain. I know people who's parents lived here for like 40 years, they were born here and are now working here but still don't have it.

No hard feelings to anyone - if I were a Q I wouldn't want to hand out citizenship (and thus diluted IPO offerings).

How many Palestinians, Sudanese and other nationalities bacame Qataris. I admit that when I mentioned "non-arabs" I was thinking of sports people. But there are many arabs who have taken Qatari nationality including at least one leading judge and many other individuals. There are a lot of people biding their time to achieve the residency requirement before submitting the papers to obtain Qatari citizenship.

I was surprised at the way "Campers" comment appeared to ridicule the fact that anyone would want Qatari citizenship. I'm surprised that you didn't pick up on that qatari!

There are many individuals, both arab and non-arab that have taken Qatari citizenship Camper so don't belittle it.
