car accident, i need help

Good morning,

I just had an accident today, no injuries and nothing serious thankfully.

I will not talk about the way it happened, what happened after the accident is the issue I want to discuss.

1-      The guy relocated his car immediately without allowing me to take any picture.

2-      He tried to leave but I told him I want to call the police just to reserve our rights.

3-      He got into his car and also relocated it far from the accident.

4-      The police came, he asked us what happened and the other guy made up a completely different story!!!

5-      The police guy then asked me what happened, I told him what actually happened and that the other guy is lying.

6-      He forgot about the accident, he started to give me lectures how to talk politely and it is not allowed to say about someone that he is lying!!! I told him to educate me of other word that means “not saying the truth” and that made him more upset!!!

7-      Then he brought up his book and started to write stuff I couldn’t read, pulled 2 cards and wrote on them the date of the accident and gave the cards to us.

8-      He didn’t take any picture; he didn’t ask any one that witnessed the accident!!! it was just like that!!!

9-      He went into his car he called me and told me that on Thursday we should meet at court, a fee of 5000 QR should be paid by the mistaken plus a chance of some jail time!!! (I think he wants to scare me or something)

So was that the correct procedure?

What if the other guy got into an accident today and got hit in the same location? Wouldn’t the evidence disappear? What if he does it intentionally?

Should I hire a lawyer for such things? I have been here for just 3 months and I don’t know the correct procedures so I would appreciate any advice or help.

Finally be safe and god bless …

I went to the traffic department and, as expected, the policeman filed me to court just because i said that the other man lied!!! The officer i spoke with helped me and removed the court order but he issued a paper stating i am the cause of the accident... I refused and said i didn't do it and will not accept this result He told me not to push it further and accept the situation as is !!! He said that the car is already covered by insurance so i shouldn’t worry ... Advise guys?  And @2012 Olympics, i have no reason to lie. I am not asking for money or anything i just stated what happened to me and asked for advise so next time don’t throw accusations to people - god forbid you would be put in the same situation and people will doubt your honesty like you did.

I doubt the honesty of the OP.  Qatar police to not make such threats for minor traffic incidences.

again, court has nothing with the incident.

the guys in the traffic departement are very very friendly, supportive, and honest. i've been envolved in 3 accidents so far. with qatari, non-qatari arab, and from india. it does NOT change or affect the decision whatsoever. believe me. they are professional.

when i had an accident with the qatari, he was like hand shaking and kissing all the officiers. laughing and talking familiar with them. i was in the R/A and he was coming into the R/A and hit me. his fault. he told the officer that my light was red. not true, but i didn't react. when asked, i told them, and than told them "no,my light was not red, it was green". the decision was that it was his fault. no matter what, they do a honest job.

Dear friend,

Taking a picture of the accident is most important in such an accident especially when both of u have a common language to talk.

Yesterday, while I was going through the main road behind al imadi building an Egyptian guy (who knows only Arabic) came from my left side T road and hit my car. I was seeing him looking somewhere while his car was stopped. when i reached near to him he advanced the car without looking front side and eventually hit my car's rear door.

I was unable to get down immediately as his car was near to my door. this guy came down and told me that it was his mistake and agreed to go Matar police station and removed the car.

Upon reaching the policeman he manipulated a different story and tried to convince the police man in arabic. when i tried to explain he interfered and said its through arabic such matters are dealt with.

The intelligent policeman recognized the truth and penalized him. Though i was given justice, all those time i was under impression that this guy will trap me. if I had taken a photograph it would be a great relief for me at that situation.

Though i had lost the morning session in office due to this guy's negligence, i am quite satisfied the traffic authorities.

so, please, please take a snap with ur mobile at least before removing the car...

I find it unusual for a police officer to say such things - perhaps you were driving more dangerously than you thought

If the guy whom you made an accident is arabic and you're not, then you made a problem for yourself by telling that he is lying (though it true indeed). Good luck dear friend and be very carefulllllll next time.

As for the accident, you need a police report. The policeman will have told you to go to a Police Station to pick it up. This will detail whose fault the accident was (the police at the scene decide this) and detail the damage to your vehicle.  Make sure it's correct as the repair shops are (officially) only allowed to repair the damage detailed on the police report.

If you don't speak arabic, take someone with you to the police staion who does as you need to get it right there and then. You'll be charged about QR120 for the privilege.

Once you've got your police report, go to your insurance company and report the accident. They'll then make arrangements to have the car repaired (assuming you have adequate cover).

Better get the help of someone who can speak arabic. A Qatari is highly recommended :).

This is how they treat an accident here. Police will ask you, where did you came from and where your going? the same will be ask on the other side. Then police will write a report and will not tell you whose at fault. You will know it once you meet in the traffic dept and argue with the decision if its not on your advantage.

in most accidents, people would blame the others so it wont help saying that it his fault :(

I think they are just scaring you.. Never heard of them going to court so fast or even penalty sounds strange.. Better go to the traffic department and find a captain to talk to

What does it say on the piece of paper that the officer gave you - if you don't speak Arabic, get someone to translate asap? This will indicate who he thought was at fault.

Also, I assume you meant the other driver was threatening you with jail time and a big fine - as long as no one was hurt and you did nothing illegal then should be no problem and also he should not try to intimidate you like that. Not nice.

no alcohol and no one was hurt, i told the police guy that the man was lying and he said that i am not allowed to say that and he can press charges against me, i told him ok what other word can i use instead of lying and that made him burst . is saying that the other man is lying considered as an insult if he was actually lying !!!

the accident was not blocking the road it was on an alley and there was enough passage for other cars.

i know i should have taken photos, this is my mistake !!!

u must relocate immediately (if no one is hurt), in order not to block the free flow of the traffic. if u don't u'll be fined 1500 Qr for traffic flow disturbance. no need for fotos. the inspector at the location gives his statement, than u go to traffic departement so a further investigation happens.

that's the normal procedure.

about the 5000, or the court, it must be a different story: insulting, or disrespecting (the officer or the other driver...) it will be delt seperatly. he might have heard u insulting him and asked the policemen to raise charge.

So whose fault?  YOu will not get jail time unless alchohol was involved or someone was hurt.  Sounds like police suspected you of wrongdoing.
