Cheque intentionally signed wrongly.

Hello,
I have a friend who had a contract with a guy for investment in his company. He gave an amount to the guy and agreed to pay the monthly profit. For security purpose the guy issued a cheque against the amount collect. A year passed and only 10% of the total has came back. My friend tried to deposit the cheque but it was returned claiming wrong signature and this after several promisses to return the money.
Anyone can advise about legal measures can be taken against that guy?
Thanks
Thanks we went to police and they advised to open case in civil court. Im not sure how things will get complicated.
Suggest, he first gets a document from the bank which confirms the signature on the cheque does not match. He can then approach the police head office and tell them the situation. May be they will help by calling the person or advise your friend to file a case in the court of law.
It appears the other person is clever and possibly knows how to play around with such games.
