I was looking for studio type accommodation in Qatarliving. Then this sales rep asked me to meet him in the site. he showed me the place and i liked it even if it is still under construction. He said the studio is ready by the end of March 2015. He asked for reservation fee and I was able to produce only QR500. He even gave me his QID number and I even took photo of it with him holding his card. The problem arose when we asked him to finalize the contract with the developer. He said the studio he showed us is already taken and he offered us a different unit. I don't like the unit he is offering. I just ask him to return the QR500 deposit. He is now making alibis. I asked to meet him but he doesn't show up in our apppointed place. How can I file a police complaint to recover the said amount. I have his photo with his QID plus the paper where he acknowledged receipt of the said amount. I'll appreciate comments from fellow QLers'. Thanks

in order to close this issue i want to make some statement.

1. since there is an email address in the business card that he has given me, i wrote an email to his company.

2. maybe, his company called his attention because he started negotiating after the email was sent.

3. he gave me a number to call, he said his partner's number.

4. his partner promised to return the money.

5. finally, the money was returned to me. he said he is very sorry for causing us inconvenience.

6. case closed.

thanks for all your comments.

I asked my office mate who is also his countryman to talk to him regarding the issue. He promised to return the money in a day or two. Hopefully, he'll keep his promise.

I suggest you go to the police station. It is not about the amount of money that he took from you. It is the principle of him learning his lesson and getting back what is due you. If he learns his lesson from this experience, you are also able to do his "would be" victims a favor coz I suppose he wouldn't want to do that again.

Let him take that 500QR provided you can give him a tight slap, otherwise go to police.

You shouldn't ignore that amount. screw him left and right. this so called agents are eating peoples money for nothing.

Go to police and make him come there and money will come to you in no minute. Its clear that fault is at his side. stand up and get your money back even if its 100QR. and if you (anyone) who feel its small amount then please donate to needy. there are people in Qatar who are working for just 600. at least it would make them smile and pray for you :)

QL Members,

Whether its QAR 500 or 5000 or 50000, it's your hard earned money.

God knows how many people he must have duped in the same manner. Such cases should not be taken lightly and has to be reported to the concerned for taking appropriate actions accordingly.

You may recover it in some other ways like when you pass that side visit his office & have tea coffee biscuits form his office & spoil his time and on the second round break a window pane in the third round bump his cars rear view mirror while entering his office , or scratch his car's paint with your cars key ....... .............. ............

The company has since closed down and possibly the person has returned to his country. His business was not doing well as I got to learn from his staff. I have written about this experience so that other QLers should be very careful when making an advance payment to people.

Can you share his details here so that other QLers are warned of his behavior?

Couple of years back my friend faced a similar problem but that was related to the purchase of a car. He had made an advance payment of several thousand to a registered rent-a-car dealer and had obtained an official receipt from company's office located at Aziziya. The car could not be taken to the Police department immediately for the transfer due to the late hours in the evening when the deal was struck. However, the next morning when the friend went to take over the vehicle, the seller began making excuses. This went on for couple of months. It transpired that the rent-a-car company had purchased the vehicle through a bank loan and the documents were still with the bank. Not being able to get his cash refunded, my friend finally sought the help of the police and approached the police station at Crazy signal. The police called seller several times who promised them the money would be returned "next week." Finally, the police advised my friend to lodge a case against the person and his company at the court. The crook taunted my friend saying he could go anywhere for help and advised him to go to court where it would take several months for the verdict. He also boasted that he knew all the laws as he had been in Qatar for three decades and would not appear on the first three hearing dates, giving the court some excuses for not being to appear while the friend would need to be present on all hearing dates as he had lodged the case. Finally after over six months of running after him, he returned the money in installments but this was done through the help of one if his countryman who mediated and brought the matter to its conclusion. I suggest this gentleman to forget his QR 500 and charge it to "experience." The amount is not that big for the hassle he would need to go through to get the money back.

I think you first tell this gentleman to return the money or else you will be going to to Police. This itself may hopefully solve your problem as the amount is not that big. All the best. Pls give us feedback.

Visit the Capital Police Station located near the junction of B Ring Road (diagonally opp Crazy Signal).

Narrate the whole incident to the officer & provide him all the details that you have (i.e. contact number of the sales rep, his QID copy & the acknowledged receipt).

Rest assured, that asshole will be in safe hands.

You can go to Mesaimeer Police Office and speak to them directly. Ideally, you need to take someone who speaks Arabic.
