Yes regarding sponsor letter infact one day I read the news in the newspaper that the authority decides to do away with it but after two days it seems the authority change their mind and revert back to the old system - whereby sponsor letter is still required - and those applying within that past two days have to produce the sponsor letter and are not excuse from it - very odd system .....

There was another post which said the new rule of not requiring the Sponsor latter has been scrapped and the people who did the license have to back and produce there sponsor letter now.

So guys you need to have a sponsor letter to go for the driving license.

Charan: You are right for Indians, Srilankans.. they need to go through the full test. Even if they have International DL.

The fact is some sponsor are a bit mean and don't want them to be mobile and wants them to depend on their transport services for whatever their excuses are for not allowing his people to have a driving license. In that case this new law that just came out is a big help to these people case. But of course people who don't have problem asking NOC or authorization letter from their employer should be alright. So this new law gives benefits to those people who has difficulties with their sponsor allowing them to have a driving license. :P

In my opinion, it's easier to just get the letter from the sponsor!

Well! what my friends did was they carry this newspaper with them when they went to the traffic police. really odd system!

entrance door of the Driver's License Application Room in Moroor last week when I went there to transfer the registration of the car I bought.

It says there, company sponsored or personally-sponsored individual should get an NOC from the sponsor in applying for license.

Don't worry my friend's who were not granted and not given a letter by their sponsor before to apply for a driving license, went to the traffic police end of this month and apply for their licenses and they are now on process for driving school as they have their licenses from their country. :P Promised!

jjh, to be on the safe side it doesn't hurt bringing the letter from the sponsor. You never know when the rules will change here. Put it this way, I even had to have another picture taken because the background color did not comply with what they were looking for. My point is, you never know what they're gonna ask you.

There's a recent news no need to have a sponsor letter in order to apply for a driving license.

That is not true dmigtysolomon. If she has British license she DOES NOT need to for the driving test.

if you have a live DL from your home country, you can apply for temporary license but you have to go for the driving test. Temporary because RP is not yet issued. The temporary license co-terminus with your business or visit visa so if RP is still not issued, you have to extend the temporary license for another fee.

As for IDL holders, nobody can really say how long the validity is, some says one month, others says three months and jjh said she used it for seven months, so to be safe, vonvert the IDL to temporary license, much easier procedures.

If you have a valid license from your country, take the direct driving test (you are given two chances to pass), but my advice is, take a refresher course from the driving scholl wher you intend to take the test. This will give you the chance to familiarize with the test (area and vehicle to be use) and improved your chances of passing (which generally speaking is really hard to pass). Luckily, i did it one time only (with a five day refresher course)

Charan, mine is South African, not Aussie. But I do hear you and you are absolutely right. I didn't check his nationality, my bad.

Brandylady, you do not need the RP to get the temporary one, assuming yours qualify. If it is British, it will qualify. You will need to get it converted to the permanent one in three months, though. But it's all really painless, I must say.

BrandyLady - Your's is UK licence but crazyfish's is Sri Lankan. Make a big difference :(

am going to the dept if that is so easy, just an eye test, thought I needed RP to get a licence??

By anonymous• 14 Jul 2008 12:30

Fatcat - it will not work for him. Your's is OZ licence and his one is Sri Lankan. Sri Lankan licences are not convertable. He has to pass the full test as I did :(

Yes, I forgot to mention that you need a letter from your sponsor.

By anonymous• 14 Jul 2008 11:36

but you need to ask your HRD regarding some papers needed. Very minimal fee. Better do it while your IDL is valid because after some time, you need to apply for temporary license but you will have to go for the tests.

Folllow Fatcat advice, get it now.

No, Da, after I got my RP I went to the traffic department and got my license converted to a permanent one. Just had to pay QR250 and got it immediately.

You just need to take your passport, your visa (not your RP), a picture, your original drivers license and go to the traffic department in Madina Khalifa. You'll need to pay QR180 (using a credit/debit card), pass the eye test and they'll give you the temporary license (provided your country is one of the accepted ones) immediately.

you still on that temporary license??

No one could give me a straight answer to that question when I got here. So, to be on the safe side, I got a temporary license. It's simple, you pay QR180 at the traffic department and you get a temporary license that is valid for 3 months.

your's an isolated case, be safe than sorry. Actually, one of my friend drive a car for almost 6 months without a valid IDL or qatar license (but now he has) and yet did not run in any trouble. We call it LUCK!!!!

convert it to even a temporary Qatar license (where RP is not needed) and correspondingly, convert to permanent license once your RP is issued. I did it that way
