Hi niceguy,

I have been studying shotokan karate for the last 3 1/2 years, and it would be just great if I could continue with this discipline instead of having to switch to another type of martial arts. Do you have any info on shotokan dojo or classes, and do they allow women to join?

If you have any good news about this, please let me know!

Sincerely,

Scuba

P.S. We are moving to Doha in August 2007

The academy promised me that we will make the class earlier after the asian games so keep checkign up i will make a post once we have confirmed timings for the BJJ class.

Dvargas there are like 8 types of different classes at the academy and you can come watch all of them and pick what you think is suitable, there is kickboxing, Aikido, Karate (3 types i think), even Kung-fu added recently, all the instructors are wonderful people you will love it.

Just wanted everyone to know that I attended a BJJ class tonight held in a karate school just across the street from the Doha Clinic. The class is being taught by a blue belt in BJJ who is a Qatari and trained in BJJ while studying in the US.

It was a good group of friendly guys. Most (like me) are beginners. Let me know if any of you are interested in training. The classes are 10-11pm Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights.

Actually, there is an art that is distinctly different from other arts (including traditional Japanese jiu jitsu, capoeira, judo, etc...) called Brazilian (or Gracie) Jiu Jitsu. BJJ was started by the Gracie family in Brazil about 80 years ago. You can read more about the history at www.gracieacademy.com .

I have trained in BJJ for the past 3 years. I am still a beginner (it takes most people 10-15 years to get a black belt and most earn a new belt after 2-3 years of solid work), but have grown to love the art. It is the foundation of the new Mixed Martial Arts phenomenon that is sweeping europe and the USA.

The UAE has become a hotbed for BJJ since one of the sheiks trained in the art while studying in the US. The Abu Dhabi Combat Club was founded to offer BJJ and other combat sports to the public in that region and also is the sponsor of the most elite grappling contast on the planet, the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Tournament. Bahrain has also begun a BJJ team and is doing quite well in international competitions. I have been surprised that so few in Qatar have heard of this art.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. If anyone owns a martial arts school and would like for me to teach some beginner classes, I would be happy to volunteer.

Wow...good man. Keep us (the potential judo community) informed please. I worked out with the Cubans a long time ago in Venezuela, and they are (were and probably still are) very friendly folks. The Qatari's cannot train in the US and learn anything as US judo is renown for poor (but pretty) judo. In fact, for a country the size of the US, we're pretty bad. Anyway, if you find anything else out, please email me at: [email protected].

Hey guys,

I did some research and I found the Qatar Judo federation. They have moved from their old building in Ma'moora so the numbers above wont work. The Juniours train everyday of the week (Sunday-Thursday) from 2 to 3 and the seniors are from 3 to 4 something (Saturday-Thursday) at Jasim Bin Hamad School at al-Dafna area. I am not sure about the exact location of the school yet, but I will be checking it out later today.

If any of you guys is planning to Join them, then I believe you will be training with the Juniors for at least a month or so, as in a couple of weeks the Seniors are being flown into Syria and Cuba for training camp -the US state department must be love with these guys!

Anyhow, I'll do some more "recon" and I'll keep everyone updated.

Hey I have found a dojo here that has several different arts. I myself have been involved in traditional stand up Jui Jitsu back in the states and I have not been able to find a dojo for Jui Jitsu..but I have found one that does Aikido, Kung Fu, and Karate. They did have a instructor that did Brazilial Jui Jitsu for a while but he left and went back to the states. The Aikido instructor is rather good and I enjoy taking classes there. I have not found a Judo dojo as of yet but I am still looking. Occasionaly this dojo does find instructors that want to teach other forms and if one comes around I can let you know how to contact this dojo and get a class going. Contact me at [email protected] and I will be happy to pass on any infomation I can for you.

According to Marhaba magazine, available here, there's karate, shotokan karate (is that different? I don't know!) judo and taekwondo, mostly at the hotels, and mostly offered as lessons. I don't think there are regular tournaments, unless for school kids.

Well, I know that there is a Judo Federation club. but I dont know if its open for anyone to join and train. But if its not, I would like to start a free club so I could keep on training. I am currently a blue belt and I should be getting my purple belt by the end of this year. So it would be good to get a bunch of guys who like to train and something if nothing is available. I would call the Judo club but its long distance for me.
