My husband and I and our 3 children are planning on moving to Qatar in Sept 2014. My husband is a health and safety manager and I am a primary school teacher. We want a new experience for all of us and hope to spend a couple of years in Qatar, maybe longer. I would be so grateful for any advice from anyone who has done similar and is living in Qatar at the moment? Everything from accommodation, schooling, living, social aspects, all advice is welcome!! Many thanks in advance x

If you hold a british passport, you will get big salary. Both you and your spouse can work. Seriously I think you select the best location for a change.

Hey Lisa,

My wife and I moved out here and she is also a teacher. Life in Qatar is great and the schools seem to be pretty good too. In terms of packages and all that stuff drop me a message and ill fill you in properly.

I know that my wifes school are hiring and I also work with a relocation company so if I can be of any help just say!

Thanks so much for the ones who bothered to send me a sensible reply. As for the rest....find someone else's thread to play games with!!

Obviously this will take a lot of planning (due to schools etc..) so 2014 is a sensible timescale i thought? maybe I'm wrong?? That's why I was asking for advice!!

The main living expenses here are accommodation and schools. You need to make sure that these will be paid by the company along with flights back to the UK for you all once a year. With three kids you're going to need a villa which will cost around 15,000QR on a decent compound. Not exactly sure about school fees as mine is still too young but Google Doha College or Doha English Speaking School to get a rough idea. Make sure you're sitting down as they're not cheap. Check out the classifieds on this website for car prices. Ideally you really need a 4x4, both for safety on the roads and trips into the desert. Other expenses are similar to the UK or in some cases (like clothes) a little more expensive. Petrol is ridiculously cheap. I don't know what your husband expects to earn but I would suggest around 15,000 - 18,000 a month on top of accommodation, schools and flights as a minimum. Make sure you get on a good compound with lots of facilities - you will appreciate having Western neighbours and the kids will have friends to play with. Finally, make an effort with your neighbours, all expats have been in the same boat as you and everyone will be happy to help/offer advice/invite you round for a drink etc. Good luck!

Finding a place in good schools can be very difficult and very expensive.

If you are the socially active type, and live for positive stuff not negative, you will love Qatar. As I do.

Salaries vary, some companies pay a small basic with all other expenses paid (accommodation, schooling, flights etc). Stick to main stream like justice said and do not attempt to come to Qatar for any less than suggested (50k per month)as a full package and maybe even more. Life is expensive, in fact very expensive...Fuel is cheap and that is about it.

Do not plan more than 2 years, this should be your limit.

Thank you so much for your help, my husband's background is in construction so he is hoping to find work here in the UK so that we can get accommodation in with his work package. Do you mean 50000 per month??
