Sailing in Doha

We are new to sailing and as such thought it wise to take a few lessons. We have just finished taking our beginners' yacht course with Regatta Sailing Association. It was great.

We now need to get out on the water and practice a lot before buying a boat and having to bring it in to Doha.

There is a fleet of Colgate Sailboats on swing moorings in the Doha bay. There is a huge "Rent Me" painted on the hull of one and I have dialed the number but the person who answered does not seem to know anything about Sailboats for rent in Doha.

Does anyone have any contact information for renting sailboats in Doha? We have heard of these Colgates but need to know how to get in touch with the person who rents them.

Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

Anyone knows if the sailing club in Doha facilitates members in importing equipment from abroad. In particular Dinghies or windsurfing equipment. Thanks

I own a Beneteau 44.7 racer/cruiser, and I race in Dubai when ever there is regatta. So if you are interested in sailing around in Qatar water, and get the feeling of Qatar Sea, call me and we can go out on a nice cruise during the weekend. It's free I just need to have more involved in sailing so that we develop this sport as much as possible. My email is [email protected]. Send me an email and I'll send you my phone number. The boat is at the Ritz Carlton marina, berth B20

We hope his questions were answered, but he didn't answer ours.

Sailing indeed is serious business. When i was certified for dinghy sailing back in 1981, my instructor used to say: if dinghy sailing could be compared to car driving, then yatch sailing is comparable to bus driving, the feeling is totally different. But to become a bus driver, you must first be a very good car driver, and that takes many years.

One of the best deals in town. Unlimited use of lasers, 470s, etc for less than 1000QAR a year. Thye have coaches and lessons too but not sure what they cost if anything. Of course, their boats are a bit wetter than the colgate/j boats, but a great avenue with which to learn. They are located between the marriot and the oasis hotels.

The guy in charge of those colgates is Mohammed #537 4155. If you haven't sailed them before but can sail a laser then it's just a short conversion course. 2 lessons maybe and he'll throw in some free hours rental. They're great to sail - just as easy as lasers really with a few more ropes.

... was a joke. His two sailboats were always moored at the Four Seasons, they never left port, although there was plenty of breeze in January... Mike guy there, has NO serious program, and NO committment to a timetable. His priority is to sell boat time to the hotel customers. Also, there seem to be no turnover of ineterested people in Doha.

Tell me Dreamcatcher, to take the course did you present your own team of six (6) interested people, or he had enough people to complete the team; how many weeks (overall) did it take to complete the course; and when did all this happen (month/year)?

Thank you!

Serendipity... they do offer both. No, you do not need to take one before the other. We really did not have much intention of getting wet in Dhinghys'... and our thought is to purchase a yacht between 35-45 feet in lenght...

And as to getting started... Just Do It! as Nike says. A lot of fun and gets your mind off of everything else...

I noticed there's a difference between the sailing course and the yacht course at the Regatta Sailing Association. Do you not need to take the basic dinghy sailing course first? Or can you go straight to the yacht course? Had you sailed before?

I've a friend who's in a sailing club and races back here in the UK and it sounds like a lot of fun, although the British weather/temperature puts me off at the moment. I'm thinking of taking up sailing when I come out there.
