3 quick questions, i finaly found my house, and i just bought all my furniture from home center, i now need the ac's, tv fridge etc etc etc, should i buy them form carefour since i heard it has pretty much the best prices, and it offers free delivery and install, or could i get better deals outside (mostly looking for good deals on 32" LCD tv's) and window ac's.... thats the first question...
2nd question, how much should i tip the workers who will install the home center furniture.....
3rd question is, i have been here for almost 4 weeks, and my bank is taking care of the visa process for me (seeing how they have my passport and they told me i will be contacted for medical, and when they get me an appointment with the american embassy for the (i am not a criminal or a wanted felon paper)) however so far, and after 4 weeks of me being here, i was not contacted by the people incharge of this process, and when i talk to HR, they keep telling me not to worry....well now i as the experts here...shold i worry, is there a time limit i should abide by...or is this normal, seeing how i ned a landline to apply for internet access and mosaic tv, i cant get one without a residency permit, so now i am stuck with a house, that has no internet or tv.....and this for me is a disaster....any advice on that issue as well....i guess its more like 4 questions not 3 lol....

your help is greatly appreciated

i think i will be going for the residential package since i also heard mosaic is very inconsistent and the internet download rate is pure rubbish, but in the mean time i most definitely will be getting show-time, since i need to watch the england premier league (any idea how fast they will install showtime after i apply for it)..., i guess its show-time, and a normal satellite...bukra inshalah..inshalah kheer...inshalah soon, 3 phrases i heard a lot here, and coming form an arab background i definitely got used to it, sadly i even started using those phrases with customers at work lol...as the proverb goes, live with the people for 40 days and you become like them lol....

as always, thanx for the gr8 replies and advice, lord knows this community has really helped me in adapting and answering the hundreds of questions in my head, i cant believe i have been here for 4 weeks, it seems like yesterday i was enquiring about excess backage and what salary should i expect....

bukra insha'allah... LOL

okay... seriously now...

Carrefour will give you decent rates... I've looked around each time and I always end up buying electronics/electrical appliances from the Hypermarkets. But I'll let you in one one secret... the only way you can get a better deal is if you know people in the agencies directly...

How to tip em?... tip em what you feel like... I offered them lunch and they accepted it... so I guess they appreciate the generosity... personally what I really liked was the pickup they parked in front of the gate which said on it... 'this house is furnished by home center'...

as for your third question... you have some cheek... four weeks and you are getting impatient... shame on you! shwai shwai bukra insha'allah

:-)

But since you don't have a phone connection and internet connection... and I'd really like to see more of you on QL... I'll advise you that if you could find the mandoob who is handling your papers and demonstrate your generosity, your papers may find their way to the top of the pile on its own....

i received my RP over 3 months ... but that was nearly 7 yrs ago. And to be honest ... i never tip the guy from the home centre ... i only gave them some drink or snack if we have any in the house. The last guy who put up my clavinova piano decline politely our offer for something to eat and drink.

Internet is very common story ... my friend who just moved to Qatar Airways compound only got their internet after over 3 mths.

As PM said ... i would go to bigger establishment like carrefour to buy your housing appliances. We went to Al Mannai showroom for our stuffs when we just arrived ... they gave us 20 percents discount which is the same price they sell in carrefour.

Just relax, put your feet up. Dont get worked up since you just arrived. Everything in Doha can take forever. Be it internet, telephone, RP, driving lesson etc etc. Take it as an experience ... if you start to compare with your previous country you have lived you will get wound up and starting hating the place, which is not a good start.
