What can I grow on my terrace/patio here in Doha?

I now have quite a large area of terrace and, although I know how to grow patio plants, hanging baskets and vegetables in containers etc. in the UK, I have know idea what will survive in this type of climate here in Doha!

I think there are one or two nurseries around and even a largish one somewhere, which sell plants, but I haven't been there yet and from what I see in the shopping malls anything which is over about 6 inches high costs a fortune!

Can I grow tomatoes from seed here, for example, or cucumbers, or a little palm tree, or bougainvillea to trail ... or what???

Is there anyone here who is a gardener who can advise me on what will survive, if anything?

I'm not sure where to begin ...

I have to 'boast' of my terrace, because my entire apartment would fit 4 times into some of the ground floors of villas around Doha!

I have nothing else to boast about, so I would like to make the terrace something special, an extension of my living area - it was why I chose this apartment - I'm a country gal and like the open air and some greenery around me  :D

Jauntie ...now that you have done boasting about your endless acres of terrace...

You can grow anything there as long as it is shaded in the summer, and watered through the year.

The shade has to be opaque, possibly wooden that would not fly off on a windy day.

I think you will find that capsicum (the big bell peppers) grow well in containers

Now all I have to do is get motivated ...

One good thing is that the previous occupants of this apartment left lots of pots of all sizes and NOT terracotta, so I have no excuse, really, not to start 'horticulturing'.

They also left all the earth in the pots and planters, which I shall have to dispose of somehow as it must have little or no nutrients left in it by now.

Guess I can emulate the prisoners in those old films about prison escapes, when they dug tunnels under the prison, stuffed the earth down their trousers then walked around the exercise yard dribbling it out a little at a time from the bottom of their trews lol

OR .. I can just bag it up and dump it in the bin outside :D

Jauntie - laughing about the astro turf! Can you even imagine how hot that would be!

I grow bougainvilla in a pot, pansies and petunias(not summer), ferns, and that purple stuff that will grow anywhere - with the pointy, skinny leaves. I can't think of the name but it does great in the heat and it's in a lot of the beds around town.  Everything died down in the summer except for bougainvilla and purple stuff.

Mulbery is one of the fruits you can grow here.

If you want something that would trail up the wall, consider growing sweet potatoes.

Off for the day now but do call if you are interested.

I grew tomatoes and beans and salad, they are eay to grow beans can grow up the wall they flower nicely not so sure how tomatoes grow but your could try grapes they will need to be strung up and so will the beans. All of them need to be watered regularly during the summer or will not amount to anything. lol

Grapes like hot weather and grow easily and can also spend a little shadow if you have enough.

Are you starting a new business?

Well, many plants grow here provided they are given a proper care.

All the things you mentioned can grow here.

Add to it: Petunia, panse, carnations, jasmine family.

Tomato can gorw from seeds.
