What to do in Newark, NJ?

I'm on the inaugural Qatar Airways flight to Newark on the 26th. If all goes as planned, I'll arrive at 18:55 and won't leave until 6:20 until the next morning (about a 10 hour stopover) before catching a flight to Toronto.

My question: anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for about 8 hours overnight in NY? I think jetlag will prevent me from just sleeping it away. Is there anything close to the Airport to see? Should I go into Manhattan? If so, see/do what? Is it really the city that never sleeps? How about ground transportation--take a cab or shuttle or what?

I'm open to any and all suggestions. You can reply to me personally, or open this as a forum thread.

I want to thank everyone for the suggestions so far. From what I hear, it's take a cab to Manhattan--forget about anything local to the airport. Times Square and Broadway, possibly Empire State Building. (given my flight arrives at 7:00 could I even take in a show by the time I clear immigration and get a cab downtown?)

Thanks to Michael Moore, I know that an ex-con whitey has a better chance of getting a cab in NYC than a squeaky clean black guy so I should have no problem getting a cab back to the airport in the morning (unlike Doha).

Anyone else? With direct flights to NY, I don't think this will be my only time going through Newark. QA certainly beats Air Canada hands down for service and comfort even in economy. I'd like to avoid AC for the trans-atlantic crossing in the future.

guys, he doesn't have enough time to do all of this. Just let him walk around and enjoy the night life in Times Square area.

There's no comparison between Newark and Manhattan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Head straight to Manhattan It's a pity you don't have more time...shopping is great there on 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue but that's really for daytime...hmmm...here's a few other suggestions...

book a Broadway show online prior to going...so many to choose from, just look online at the selection

take a horse drawn hansom cab ride round Central Park...you can find them at Central Park West and 5th Avenue

go up the Empire State building...go at sunset and you can see fantastic views of NY as the city lights up at night

take the Staten Island Ferry Ride around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (there's a really interesting museum on Ellis Island about the immigrants to USA over the years and their stories, clothes, etc. It's a wonderful place...hope it's open in the evening)

A favourite of mine is the Metropolitan Museum...filled to the brim with amazing art/artefacts...it's got the world's largest collection of Islamic art if that's your bag.

For eating you will find literally thousands of restaurants and all kinds of cuisine to suit every budget.

Well, those are some of my favourite things to do...hope you enjoy your time!

you need to take a shuttle/cab from Newark to Manhattan. Cant remember the cost, but 20-40 $. Just walk around, stop at cafe's or hot dog carts, or may be a slice of NY pizza. You can start at Times Square and take one of those toruist buses in a tour around the city, another $60 may be. Believe me, you will have fun.
